Will you miss the car?

How will oil depletion affect the way we live? What will the economic impact be? How will agriculture change? Will we thrive or merely survive?

I take back everything I said in praise of bikers being kinder to the planet. I despair.
But we don't know Haggis' definition of 'Behave'

BTW is that picture Our Man on his way to Bury, then?

Do we have any PowerSwitch bikers?
Yes...see previous page!... 125cc 'large wheel' Honda motor scooter. model SH125i... not the model I originally wanted, but in the event glad I ended up with this one. 100mpg driven gently as I do, more like 80mpg driven flat out all the time, as the young Spanish tend to drive theirs. Somebody smaller than me -I'm 6'1" and heavily built - and not flogging it could get up to 125mpg - as has been reported on a couple of blogs.

Carries 4 bags of shopping - 2 in the topbox, 2 between my feet on the platform. 95 octane is €1.31 a liter and set to come down in the near future. The price would have to go a lot higher before I started to feel the pinch - I don't do a high mileage, probably about 1200 miles pa. If I outlast this one (possibly not! Well maintained Honda bikes seem to last forever) I imagine the next would be a hybrid or all electric - Chinese hybrid scooters are just starting to come onto the market. Currently a bit underpowered for my taste

Scooter gear consists of an open face helmet (the Spanish police started to enforce the law a few years ago, before then most people didn't bother.) short sleeve shirt, cotton shorts and a pair of sandals. Much more enjoyable than sitting in a car with closed windows and aircon. In the winter I switch to long cotton trousers or jeans, a windcheater jacket and an old pair of leather ski gloves I bought back in the 70's

How does the tarmac know to transmogrify itself into something soft because your falling from a scooter rather than a bigger bike?

I can't imagine bare elbows, knees and sandals hold up to well to tarmac at 30mph.

It's a shame that a 100kg bike with 70kg rider can't get way more than 100mpg. I mean a 1000kg car with 5 passengers can easily get 60mpg - with the best more like 80mpg. That does seem better value in terms of utility per gallon.

I'd like to see a scooter getting more like 250mpg.

Indeed, and as recent US/UK fuel consumption stats show, it isn't going anywhere more often than ever!

Haven't chipped in on this thread I don't think. But I can say a resounding YES I will miss it. Of course if it does ever get replaced by an electric model that will be great, but the utility and freedom of a car is unmatched by anything, why do you think it is so popular?

One of my friends who moved out to Switzerland 3 years ago has come over to the country for this week, and it got me thinking about how much worse life would be without the car. No more days out anywhere, no more care free traveling and no more late night cruises to where ever you want to go.

Of course I realise that if the car wasn't here then my friend probably wouldn't be either as he flew here on a budget flight.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a super economical, low powered motor bike, capable of carrying a  95kg  passenger with a comfortable, back-friendly sitting position? Even if it got 140 mpg (2 litre/100km) that would be worth considering.

Last time I rode a motor bike in mid winter (here in the UK) I needed a lot of layers to ensure that I didn't get hypothermia!
