ok sure point taken, I've heard of stirling engine CSP etc.

when people say "steam" they usually think of the breakthroughs that started with coal-fueled steam engines.
I gather the Steam Engine was Developed (aka "became economical") for draining coal mines originally. Coal already in use for extracting metals and heat i guess.

Ah, bliss! :lol:

I've just got a copy of the How to Build with Grid Beam book. It's basically a more elaborate version of Habitat self-assembly furniture for people with a little more imagination. However, if you were to combine the root of the ideas outlined in the book with some more radical philosophy, and a deeper understanding of the energy and resource issue, I think you could build a really interesting movement for low-tech DIY engineering.
