Washing destroys the shelf life of most root vegetables so if you are going to dig any up, leave then to dry and very gently brush the soil off them before storing them in sand or peat , ensuring that they are not touching. Spuds seen to be OK if stored touching although if one rots it will pass that on to its neighbours. I suppose that spuds are less likely to rot than other root veggies as you very rarely see injunctions not to store spuds touching.

Washed, use them in a stew or soup and freeze them. Unwashed, as per others' advice.

USA doomers often recomend a stash of tinned butter, but this does not seem to be available in the UK.
Can anyone recomend a UK supplier of tinned butter ?

Cereals, fruit, and cakes or biscuits are often more enjoyable with cream, which of course contains a lot of calories.
Tinned cream is far less popular than in years gone by, but can still be obtained from some of the larger supermarkets.

Evaporated milk is nearly as good and is sold everywhere.
Since I posted that, about ten years ago ! Nestle tinned cream has ceased production. Does anyone know of alternative brands of canned long lasting real dairy cream ?

Clarified butter ghee is available in tins. I also keep a stock of tinned evaporated milk.
