In the UK at least, Fridges and Freezers are controlled waste, when they're disposed of, the gas is supposed to be collected and disposed of appropriately.
Its probably not, but still.

BUT one of the most common reasons for disposing of such equipment is becuase it no longer works, because the gas has already escaped, in which case proper disposal does not really do much good.
