Selling my flat - what next - buy again, or rent?

What changes can we make to our lives to deal with the economic and energy crises ahead? Have you already started making preparations? Got tips to share?

Think carefully about buying any land below 12 to 20 metres above sea level or land in the Environment Agency Flood zone http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ho ... fault.aspx (put your postcode into the box on the right) as we have seen this week the carnage that can occur with the more extreme weather events that GW will produce.

The Greenland Ice Cap is melting at a rapid rate now with a CO2 level of 380+ppm. The Copenhagen summit is set to go for a level of 450ppm CO2, if they settle for anything at all, and climate scientists say we need to refuce to 350ppm. So, whatever happens, we are likely to have accelerated levels of melting at the poles leading to higher sea levels. Methane release is starting already from permafrost so that will also accelerate the warming. See http://flood.firetree.net/ for flood levels.

He'll have to go for Samphire-growing and fish-farming then :) or possibly a spot of algae-for-fuel.

At least the "land" should be cheap.

Oh I know! the flood risk is the main source of my quandry. I already had a discussion on here about that and somebody posted those flood maps for me to look at. I hadn't seen the enviroment agency one though.

Suprisingly both those sites are good news for where I want to go.

Eastern edge of Barton Broad becomes the new coastline - of course any FURTHER flooding and I'd be up sh1t creek.

And as I was saying on the other thread the prediction is for the not quite water not quite land areas to just get bigger.. these are very rich in resources - loads of fish (no need to be farming them), loads of seabirds, loads of tasty reedmace, and yes samphire nearer the sea - though its a wild plant I don't know why you'd farm it!

I heard recently Newport City Council are going to be selling off a lot of agricultural land between Cardiff and Newport.. course thats also on a flood plain.

Tipi valleys looking good then!

No but in all seriousness a big part of my wanting to relocate near to either my mum or dad is my responsibility to loook after them when TSHTF.. they aren't getting any younger. So I can't really say - "Oh I ain't going there coz it might flood" "But I'm quite happy to let my mum live there" can you.

You just got to say if it happens then we'll deal with it

The ocean is NOT your friend
It can get hairy out there innit

Course if you weren't in a race you'd of reefed your sails, hauled them in close letting the boat come head to wind and rode out the storm

But you wouldn't of made any progress and you'd of lost the race so you tried to run with it and broke the topping lift

My Mum lives in Merthyr at the moment, and my sister lives with her. If TSHTF badly they will both, either, have to take their chances or come and live with us. We're all set up here and there's no way that we're moving. If your parents places aren't up to scratch, and you've got a place which is, it makes sense for them to come to you. If they won't move when told the consequences, I would say that it's up to them.

The Broads are a fresh water environment at the moment which will change to saline with sea water rises. It will take a while for the environment to settle into a new regime. Beware!

Post by sam_uk »

I have not done anywhere near enough sailing yet, I plan to buy a small boat this winter to sail all next year.
