I'm still trying to decide what to do for the best so any sensible suggestions are very welcome, keep them coming.
While wanting to avoid solutions which might be non-repairable, is there such a thing as a reliable solar pump which could just be left continuously trickling water uphill, no matter how slowly?

The cheapest solution would probably be a 12 volt submersible pump worked from a battery, and turned on/off as required.
Garden hose or 16mm pipe would be sufficient.
Charge the battery when required at the house, or from a vehicle.
A better system might be to install a 12 volt battery and PV system at the outbuildings, especialy as this could also power lights, electric fences and small tools.
Another option might be to buy a cheap petrol driven pump, the petrol useage would be very small since the pump would transfer the water quickly.
A petrol driven pump and some hose is very useful in case of fire, especialy in remote places without prompt fire brigade attendance.
The drawback would be the large hose or pipe needed to fully utilise the pump.
The best solution, but expensive initialy would be a direct PV pump.
