Well to a degree yes if you've never been in love, or never been to sea I don't think you can be a spokesman on the subject .
But singing a song is not the same as being a spokesman. This was Bob Dylan's complaint. He wrote protest songs but never wanted to be or claimed to be a spokesman for the protest movement. He just liked writing and singing songs. That was what he was good at.

Of course there's no excuse for singing cowboy songs.

That's a matter of opinion :)

Yes, you're going to the wrong workshops, Paul.
I'm pretty sure there are as many, if not more, up and coming young musicians as ever. We have a long established folk club in town that is inhabited by centenarians and long dead zombies but just round corner is a pub where there are regular open-mike sessions and gigs frequented by folk who are well under 70, or even 20.

There are only so many songs you can write about your life as an accountant or MOT tester.

Now here's a good new tune:

Talis Kimberley sings The Steps of St Paul's
Some pretty clever lines keeping up the ancient tradition of topical protest and comment in a ballad of the moment.

Here are a couple of old timers keeping up the troubadour tradition: David Crosby and Graham Nash talking about Occupy and singing in the street:

Some wise words and then a rather nice impromptu acapella song at the end.
