CCTV cameras in towns and cities across the country are being switched off by councils who cannot afford to keep them running, making it “increasingly difficult” for police to investigate serious crimes, the Government’s surveillance camera watchdog has warned.

Tony Porter, the Surveillance Camera Commissioner, told The Independent that a rising number of local authorities in England and Wales were shutting down CCTV networks to cope with the Government’s austerity cuts, raising the prospect of a “postcode lottery” for crime detection.

Shame. How did they ever cope before CCTV?

We had "Policemen", they were humans who wore a uniform that marked them out as representatives of law. They had powers to arrest someone who was caught committing a crime, even if it wasn't posted on Facebook.

So in the olden days we had to pay people to do 'jobs'.
Then we invented technology to replace the people for less money - Kerching!
Then 'we' ran out of money to run the technology.

I say 'we' as the economy is much larger now than a few decades ago... there is money, but not enough to run the CCTV cameras let alone the police people?

Just wait until people start robbing *ankers instead of them robbing us. Money for the police will come roaring back!
