Waiting for the SunriseJohn Michael Greer wrote:Back in 2005, a then-famous study done for the Department of Energy by a team headed by Robert Hirsch showed that to get through declining oil supplies without massive crisis, preparations for the descent would have to begin twenty years before the peak arrived. Since the peak of conventional crude oil production had already arrived in 2005, this warning was perhaps a little tardy, but a crash program focusing on conservation and the conversion of energy-intensive infrastructure to less vulnerable technologies might still have done much. Instead, we collectively wasted another decade on daydreams—and all the while, week after dreary week, the mainstream media has kept up a steady drumbeat of articles claiming to prove that this or that or the other thing has disproved peak oil. Given all this, is there any reason to expect anything other than a continuation of the same dysfunctional behavior, with the blind leading the blind until they all tumble together down the long bitter slope ahead?
As it happens, I think there is.

John Michael Greer musings on the Christmas story, Peak Oil and Limits to Growth - and where we are in the long emergency
A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools - Douglas Adams.
Good article. Better than the Queen's speech, I reckon.
I like the idea of starting a 'cargo cult'. We could have ritualised re-enactments of the Tesco lorry arriving, or ordering crap off ebay.
Silver Fox: "All we had to do was push a button on this pebble thing and the tiny lights on this black panel would change, and then we push these buttons with symbols on in a certain, secret sequence - and anything you desired would magically appear on the doormat a day or so later..."
Kids: "Heh... yeah, right, Granddad... now tell us the one about the flying machines again..."

Man, how are they gonna be able to add THAT to the "religious" text books? It's more unbelievable than walking on water.......Mr. Fox wrote:Good article. Better than the Queen's speech, I reckon.

The Universe does Balance and Equilibrium - neither excess nor deficit
Perhaps humanity would have been wise to follow it's example
