People in general are not bothered about burning fossil fuels and the effect that has. If there is a suggestion of a fuel shortage for cars, the queues at garages can get quite long. People will, and do, sit at level crossings with their engines running for anything up to 20 minutes and beyond.

Why shoild fuel companies think differently, they are only people.

Since getting a car with stop/start, I hate leaving the engine idling for more than about three seconds. With real time mpg metring, I can see the money drain away in front of me...

And, of course, while all the people are queuing for fuel, they are leaving the engine running. In the IIRC, US there were people running out of fuel in the queue when leaving their engines running for hours.

But there's no need to worry, with the government in charge FF burning won't stop anytime soon.

Most people IME support some vague notion of restricting FF use, provided of course that it does not affect them.

"if petrol is so bad for the enviroment, the government will have to GIVE everyone electric cars"

"we will all be using hydrogen soon, non polluting and should be almost free if produced from renewables"

"sooner or later the secret alien technology to produce free energy will become available"

And so on.
"Installers and owners of emergency diesels must assume that they will have to run for a week or more"

I know 3 otherwise reasonable people who believe that technology that would allow a car to run for hundreds of miles on a litre of fuel was bought and hidden by the Arabs in the 1960's.
