France’s military aggression in Mali is only the latest expression of a renewed Scramble for Africa being undertaken by all of the continent’s former imperialist overlords. This involves not only those powers that directly ruled Africa from the late nineteenth century through to the 1960s, such as France and Britain, but above all the United States.

Paris has never fully abandoned its imperial designs on Africa, as its recent record in Rwanda and Libya demonstrates all too brutally. It still has 9,000 troops stationed in the Ivory Coast, Senegal, Gabon, Central African Republic, Chad and Djibouti. Its return to Mali is not about combating Al Qaeda and Islamist fundamentalism, but rather a means of staking its claim to the country’s uranium, gold and untapped oil deposits and those of the West African region and throughout a landmass recently proclaimed by President Francois Hollande as “the continent of the future.”

It is as yet unclear whether the US will go beyond providing aerial support to France in Mali. But if it does not, it is only because it does not want to help a rival predatory power. 2013 opens amid a whole number of military operations being waged by Washington in a continent upon which America now depends for fully a quarter of the oil and raw materials it consumes—including oil, gold, diamonds, copper, iron and big money crops such as cocoa.

Africa is in play as far as Washington and all other major powers are concerned. US aims in Africa centre on securing hegemony over the entire continent, a conflict in which its chief rival is now China.

I came to the same realisation about this when getting to work this morning and was pleasantly surprised to find this article and that others were coming to the same conclusion.

IMO it's an excellent idea. I suspect numerous Western European nations have no real future without oversea holdings. Historically they have been backwaters who seem to have mistaken a temporary glitch from the colonial era onwards for an indefinite emergence. Modernised empires would ensure that some potential and resourcrs stays in Western hands and in the worst case scenario Europeans who have nowhere to go when PO occurs can immigrate to Africa. Apologies to any natives.

Considering the fact we ignore the plight of white South Africans, would you trust our governments to protect you, if they got you to move to some future colonial empire.

I suppose they could allow most South Africans to be massacred to increase racial hatred that might be a plan, but 60,000 have been murdered since the end of apartied, they are being discriminated against in employment, millions of them have been driven from their homeland and nobody cares.

If you wanted to have a colonial empire you would have to change the mindset of Europeans , I think the powers that be are doing things in Africa and might like to conquer places again, but their big problem will be their own domestic population, who are to fluffy and also many of which now have african relatives .

Moving to africa to a state run by black africans or by majority rule where blacks are the majority I'd say is a form of suicide

Of the 3 South Africans I have spoken to in the last week (2 white, 1 black) all have left citing the violence.

Frightening place and getting worse now Govt are making legal gun ownership difficult.

If we are stupid enough to send aid or development workers to africa well what can you say, before apartied ended we were told that there would be this rainbow nation thats not how things are working out, some people saw it coming.

Really you should have a thread "the african scramble for europe" because we are being invaded by africans, our cultures are being destroyed while the africans are busy driving the last whites out of africa .

Look at the uk or sweden or holland or france I honestly think you are delusional if you think we are invading africa, when clearly we are being invaded .
