Could smart power save the Euro?

It will actually make things worse. The tendency will be for power companies and their political allies to introduce measures that allow them to make more profit for each unit they provide.

Smart power dangles the prospect of paying less some of the time and more at others. What'll happen is the normal tariff will become the lowest, so everybody pays more for the same consumption and those in struggling economies will be put into an even worse position as they'll have less disposable income to cover the extra cost.

But then that's what TPTB want isn't it? They don't want disposable income, they want ALL our income.

I don't see how it can save the euro but sharp action on energy efficiency would certainly improve the European economy because it's highly cost effective (indeed generates savings), improves the balance of payments, generates employment, increases innovation...
