It is in all other channels already, so it should be here too.

Chevron is launching a Ad/TV/Web campaign of unprecedented scale, running all PO issues in the open. If nothing else, this will give an answer to my old Denial Theory.

tis quite scary watching the little ticker counting up the world comsumption of oil during the visit to the site!

wow
guess they must figure that the stock market will reward them for being ahead of the curve in looking for solutions to the problem more than they will punish them for the implied admission that oil is running out.

Should see some interesting repositioning and spinning by the rest of the oil pack over the coming weeks.

This is huger than HUGE! They're even using text book Peak Oil phrases and everything...

My gawd...

I'd even say, as a Liverpool fan, this is bigger news than Steven Gerrard wanting to leave Liverpool and then changing his mind to stay!

Reading the 'Issues in brief' section is amusing - they have a very saccharin view of and 'business as usual' aim for, the future:
The challenge lies in meeting this growing demand [from 6.4 to 9bn people] in a way that improves quality of life today without sacrificing it for future generations. This requires us to use all the resources we have at our disposal, and continue to develop long-term solutions that foster social progress while protecting the environment.
The challenge for the energy sector is to optimize the development and use of all sources of energy, and drive commercialization of new and emerging sources through successful business?while continuing to meet the world?s growing energy demands efficiently and with minimal environmental impact.
Fair play to them for airing the issue though.

Are we getting a bit too excited about this... where's the bell curve? Where's the talk about what it actually means for oil supply to decline? Where's the analysis showing why oil is supply will soon be declining? Where are the dates?

Naahhh... Come on! A bit greedy are we? Want everything at once kind of? Chevron is launching bloody TV ads stating "for every two barrels we consume, we find one new". This is a 180 degree turn and it is a HUGE thing!

I dont belive this comes out of thin air, I belive it is part of something orchestrated to be rolled out gradually over the next couple of years.

Very interesting indeed!

I have to say that, regardless of motives, it's a big thing for any oil company - esp the supermajors - to even implie anything slightly peak related.

I haven't studied everything on that site in detail but it does seem they are going much further than just about any "establishment" outlet.

They'll be giving the Guardian/Observer a run for their money next!

I too don't see how they just decided overnight to do this - it's a corpate decision and it's well planned.

As for "orchestrated", I am not so sure, it depends on what you mean by this. The wider motivations behind this big leap on Chevron's part are probably the most intersting aspect for me.

Well, they have released some 64 more comments on the site now, many from signatures I recognize from other forums, but the site suddely seem a bit sluggish. Maybe more traffic than they expected?

Pure speculation on my part (with help from Occam) but my guess is that it is purely inside Chevron and they have calculated that the benefits to them (being seen as a leader and proactive) will now outweigh the risks (stock price tumble) - particulalry since the risks will affect all oil companies, whereas the benefits are theirs alone.
Be interesting to see how the others respond - will they try and rubbish it and distance themselves, or will they create a bandwagon?

It is quite funny because it looks like practically 70% of the posts are "WAKE UP! PEAK OIL!"

:D

So they launch their ads on TV, people go to their site, and basically they cannot escape hearing about Peak Oil.

Beautiful.

I think the fact that it exists is excellent because it has the 'stamp of authority' for a lot of people. But as others have pointed out, some of the text, such as "The challenge is to provide the clean, affordable energy necessary for rapid economic growth and rising living standards in emerging economies, while also fulfilling demand in the world?s more developed economies. " shows that there's still a serious problem - the assumptions of 'business as usual' are still there in their fully glory.

The comments on the first discussion page from the guy at the Cato institute are jaw dropping - can't get the link just now. Still all that we don't need to worry at all as when prices get that high business will swing into action and provide alternatives stuff. I'm amazed that someone can still be saying stuff like that after such things as the Hirsch report etc.

this is just wonderful, I love the part:
There is no silver bullet solution for meeting future demand. But there are many ways we can address the issue:

improved energy policies
greater conservation
alternative energy sources
new sources of fossil fuels
increased yield from existing reservoirs
 we can? like there is an option!
I guess it won't take much to visitors to figure out the side of Peak Oil that is not "flash animated": food problems, resources wars, economic crackdown, not enough room/food for everyone...

Probably they have a whole package of products related to low energy consumption that they want to sell us. So they present the problem first and when everybody gets worried they come up with a car that uses less fuel or something similar, but sorry guys... it's 3 times more expensive than the last car you bought, in fact we, with the help of your goverment, may even declare your last car illegal, it's for your own good, now kid, just pay it or move out the line.

Wow. I'm really surprised to see this and I'm struggling to think of the motives behind such a U-turn (unless of course it's all mouth and no trousers, we'll have to wait and see).

Speculation aside, it's helpful for me to see how professional advertisers explain oil depletion. I'm a graphic design student and I'm currently doing work for the site redesigning the campaign materials (although the new versions aren't finished and uploaded just yet).
