If you could only save five books for future generations what would they be?

My choice would be:

1. Nineteen Eighty Four by George Orwell.
2. Catch-22 by Joseph Heller.
3. Meditations by Marcus Aurelius.
4. The Iliad by Homer.
5. The Prince by Niccolo Machiavelli.

PS - Does anyone know what is the best way to store books over a long period of time so the pages don't turn yellow?

1. The Complete Book of Self-Sufficiency - John Seymore
2. Tales of old poachers - John Humphreys
3. Sons and Lovers - D H Lawrence
4. Complete works of Shakespeare (and no I haven't seen/read them all)
5. Star Wars just for some pop culture.

If the pages turn yellow it means you have cheap acidic paper in a cheap book, usually paperback. You can slow the rate of deterioration by keeping it out of the sun. Try wrapping in a plastic bag, also.
Generally hardbacks are printed on better paper.

2. The Bible
3. The Koran

Oh, and maybe a copy of 120 Days of Sodom to really put the cat amongst the pigeons.

That little lot should stop them overpopulating the planet again.

I don't know about five but two would be:

Lord of the Rings (keep me occupied for several months per reading, especially in the long dark nights)

Day of the Triffids (a great novel and a good idea of post-catastrophe life)

Lord of the Rings
Dune
A Canticle for Leibowitz
Selfish Gene
SAS Survival Handbook or may be I?ting that would be tough to decide
