A New Level of Ignorance

I was talking to this girl the other day and I brought up the subject of global warming. She said that it was a myth! She explained that it was a myth made up be "psycho liberals" to scare people.

Global Warming isn't debatable, it's scientific fact! Every other day on the news you see "The Glaciers are Receeding" or "Hottest Winter in Years" and "The Polar Ice Caps are melting". This isn't a myth. It's Truth. We have messed up the planet as a whole with carbon emissions, deforestation and pollution. Just another person that thinks they are immortal and that a society based on a finite resource an live on in harmony forever!

Outside my window it's no bloody truth! During my daily bike trip to and from work it's no truth. Coldest winter in 12 years here. Ride my bike some seven kilometers over frozen snow-clad bike paths to get to work every day. Was much better five years ago. And please dont mention the spring of -05. Coldest spring I can remember. Suddenly everyone is a skilled climatologist it seems.

Global warming may be happening but I still think the causes of it are debatable. Like sunspots- more sunspots equals more solar wind equals less cloud cover equals warmer Earth. The Sun's very busy in the sunspot department at the moment. And apparently the Romans had vineyards in York- none nowadays, you have to go south to France to get your grapes- and I'm sure their chariots didn't emit much carbon dioxide. But there are other very good reasons to conserve energy, not least the fact that our energy is finite and our sources of energy cause pollution in other ways.

I'm amazed to hear that people think climate scientists are somehow ignorant of previous incidences of climate change in our historical, nevermind our prehistoric past.

The best site I've encountered on the web for a discussion of these issues is http://www.realclimate.org/ , which goes to the trouble of illustrating the difference between weather and climate, feedbacks and forcings, climate scientists and science fiction writers...

Climate modelling is designed to incorporate all the various forcings that act on temperature. CO2 levels are universally accepted amongst scientists as an important forcing. Solar forcing is not accepted as a contributory factor to the current global warming. Increases in CO2 and other GHGs are. Of course volcanic activity and other non-GHG forcings must have caused climate variations in the past - but this time it looks very much anthropogenic.

Thanks for the link.

I'll look into it.

It's unfortunate that the term "global warming" is still so prevalent, because it's misleading. The preferred term is "climate change" because it better reflects the variety of chaos we can expect, from warming temperatures, flooding, droughts, etc. Just because it's cold outside, doesn't mean global warming is a myth! Don't confuse weather and climate.

Thanks, not many people have commented on my signature. It reminds me of something Confucius might have said.

Sound like some version of "doublethink" at a first glance. It's cold outside but 'Global Warming' is a "scientific fact" beyond discussion. Based on some model? Eh?

The way I put it to people is that Global Warming is the cause - Climate Change is the effect.
