I have heard a rumor that the UK has a plan to be off oil by 2050. Has anyone else heard this? Thanks!

Yeah it's this:
North Sea Oil will all be gone by 2020 and since the UK will be an economic basket case nobody will sell us any either.
So we will easily meet the target.

The Lib Dems have a cunning plan for the UK to be "self-sufficient" by 2050, which is not quite the same, but at least the year is right! Oh and they'd probably need to win the next election first, as well as the following 10 elections, in order to put this plan into effect...

I didn't think the UK had any sort of plan. Unless our energy is supposed to come from hot air!

Maybe we can export surplus hot air with which to fund our future natural gas and oil imports.

When I read "2050" I thought of this old WWF report. If true, we'll all be off oil by then, no problem.

No, fifthcolumn was absolutely correct.

The source data is from the government's own Joint Energy Security of Supply Committee -- which was abolished in 2007, with no replacement, because this news was considered rather unwelcome to the "business as usual" consensus.

There is no way that the UK is going to transcend this trend because we can't afford to import that much energy without running up so much debt that the economy collapses (e.g., the US ONLY imports about 35% of its energy supply, and Japan imports nearer to 80%, as the UK will do by 2025, but it runs an export-based manufacturing economy to pay for it).

I've been trying to engage politicians and industry-types in a dialogue about this, but they really find it all rather too painful to talk about! In short, we're going down the tubes because those "in charge" can't allow themselves to think of more radical alternatives.
