Stupidly I have been wandering around LATOC ...
Normally I find the posters there madder than march hares ... BUT ... just lately they seem SANE ...
This is most worrying!
Is anyone else now finding discussion of doomsteads and fortifications enthralling rather than totally hatstand?

I dip into LATOC as you probably know. As with any group of people you soon find those that you have much in common with and so spend more time talking to them than the others.......

Last time I was on LATOC I was being advised to buy a months food, a sleeping bag and a tent.
The plan being to "head for the hills" wait a month for everyone else to die and then just come and take what I needed...

Three months ago that would have sounded nutty ... but now .... hmm, where can I buy a cheap sleeping bag and tent in the Sales?

Not really. I'll take civilisation and pain free dentistry anyday.
The question arises - what's our survivalist (see image above) going to do when he runs out of ammo, MREs, clean underwear, hairdressers, hair gel, razor blades and shaving foam?
This image seems a bit more realistic.

Not really, to be perfectly honest.
Is that a real person in the picture, Skeptik? That's just scary!

A "doomstead" would be an entertaining thought experiment, but nothing more.
Unless you have hundreds of millions of pounds and access to a nuclear generator and fuel (Think Submarine), then, yes, you could isolate yourself for as long as you could fuel your retreat, nuclear electricity to power lights to grow food, ect.
Nothing else is secure, certainly not a "remote" cabin, This is England, not an isolated pacific island.
Alpharubicon has a lot on why bug out bagging is not viable, and they're better than us.

You do NOT need to be self sufficient for X years.
You DO need to be 3 or 4 more weeks self-sufficient than most other people.
Anyone who is well-fed, healthy & somewhat prepared should have a fair advantage over anyone who has suffered several weeks of hunger & cold.
If my theory is correct, most people CAN make some basic survival preparations without breaking the bank.

Yes but not in the style of those USA survivalizt-types. For a start off, there just isn't anywhere in the UK that's as remote as that.

Depends how you define self sufficiency.
Electricity and gas will be rationed well before food is.
A wood burning stove/oven will set you better than others, but 4 weeks fuel wont matter in the long run.
A situation simply does not exist where 99% of the UK population will die in 4 weeks, certainly not one we can prepare for.

I dont visit LATOC anymore.
I am interested though, does anyone on there acknowledge that maybe some of their predictions were a little hasty?

The world is becoming more insane, you are fine.
I find the characterization of LATOC a bit one-dimensional in this thread. There's some loony stuff, but lots of really good insight. You've got to filter it and take some stuff with a pinch of salt. Like real life.
I have to give credit to LATOC as being ahead of the curve in a lot of things, being a broad church goes along with this.

Umm...they've got RGR but I don't think that counts!
