By "know" I mean real face-to-face relationships not those facilitated by the internet. By "aware" I mean people who really appreciate the implications of Peak Oil not just people who have heard of it.

I created this poll because the sense of isolation is starting to get me down. In total I know 7 people who have heard of Peak Oil (and I told 6 of them). Of that 6 I feel that only 3 really get it.

I would find it comforting to know that I am atypical and that there are many people out there that have some kind of active Peak Oil group or community going on around them...

Everyone involved with a Transition Initiative should know about it. If you don't have a local one, why not start one? I've no idea how many people I know who are PO aware, but it's helped by knowing quite a few PowerSwitchers personally. Hopefully we'll have another get together next year, so if we do, come along and meet loads of them.

Loads of people know about it .. and other global threats.

They simply don't have time or resources to deal with it ... real life gets in the way.

There used to be a series of adverts a little while ago where groups of kids would face the camera and ask lots of awkward questions. One girl asked "What are we gonna to do when the oil runs out?"

Like Vortex said, loads of people know about PO. It's just that few of them believe it's an immediate issue.

I agree with this. I know about but resources and funds mean I can do Jack s**t about it. So instead of trying to prepare I'm enjoying what is remaining, hopefully this means another trip to Vegas in 2009 or if not certainly 2010.

Let me be the first, in this particular thread, to object to the use of the word 'less' in the poll.

Correct, it should read 5 people or fewer

My contribution to education of the public was to print out a series of slides and put them in every barbers I know. The general public can then choose to read it or stare at page 3 of the sun.

So maybe not a good idea after all

I know plenty of people who are aware. But then I live in Brighton, which is probably not very representative of the UK in general.

Sadly people, most I know, some know about it but dont care and to them the term peak oil is too government spin, its the type of words used on the news - when I explain it, people are interested, and usually I get "see love, get out and get some engery light bulbs" then go off on a big spending spree with the banks cash

But luckily there are many people in Wales and near me that live in a manner that you would when peak oil bites - so I associate myself more and more with them They simply live as they did when growing up in the valleys

To illustrate: my boss is a genuine doomer and every day he drives the 50 mile trip to/from work. Oh and he lives within the Environment Agency's dreaded Dark Blue Contours.

Flood contours. You can phone the Environment Agency to see if you are in them or you can peruse the map (zoom in to see them).

Gosh: my father-in-law advised me of the coming electricity supply crunch yesterday, and a customer today started a Peak Oil lecture ....

The word is getting out there.

Nevertheless it will take the lights to go out before the government of the day brings in draconian bullying regulations to handle "this unexpected emergency".
