Peak Oil Music!

Two further offerings from the new Joni Mitchell album 'Shine':
Bad Dreams
The cats are in the flower bed
A red hawk rides the sky
I guess I should be happy
Just to be alive...
But we have poisoned everything
And oblivious to it all
The cell phone zombies babble
Through the shopping malls
While condors fall from Indian skies
Whales beach and die in sand...
Bad dreams are good
In the great plan.
You cannot be trusted
Do you even know you're lying
It's dangerous to kid yourself
You go deaf and dumb and blind.
You take with such entitlement.
You give bad attitude.
You have no grace
No empathy
No gratitude
You have no sense of consequence
Oh my head is in my hands...
Bad dreams are good
In the great plan.
Before that altering apple
We were one with everything
No sense of self and other
No self-consciousness.
But now we have to grapple
With our man-made world backfiring
Keeping one eye on our brother's deadly selfishness.
And everyone's a victim!
Nobody's hands are clean.
There's so very little left of wild Eden Earth
So near the jaws of our machines.
We live in these electric scabs.
These lesions once were lakes.
No one knows how to shoulder the blame
Or learn from past mistakes...
So who will come to save the day?
Mighty Mouse?
Superman?
Bad dreams are good in the great plan.
Shine
Oh let your little light shine
Let your little light shine
Shine on Wall Street and Vegas
Place your bets
Shine on the fishermen
With nothing in their nets
Shine on rising oceans and evaporating seas
Shine on our Frankenstein technologies
Shine on science
With its tunnel vision
Shine on fertile farmland
Buried under subdivisions
Let your little light shine
Let your little light shine
Shine on the dazzling darkness
That restores us in deep sleep
Shine on what we throw away
And what we keep
Shine on Reverend Pearson
Who threw away
The vain old God
kept Dickens and Rembrandt and Beethoven
And fresh plowed sod
Shine on good earth, good air, good water
And a safe place
For kids to play
Shine on bombs exploding
Half a mile away
Let your little light shine
Let your little light shine
Shine on world-wide traffic jams
Honking day and night
Shine on another asshole
Passing on the right!
Shine on the red light runners
Busy talking on their cell phones
Shine on the Catholic Church
And the prisons that it owns
Shine on all the Churches
They all love less and less
Shine on a hopeful girl
In a dreamy dress
Let your little light shine
Let your little light shine
Shine on good humor
Shine on good will
Shine on lousy leadership
Licensed to kill
Shine on dying soldiers
In patriotic pain
Shine on mass destruction
In some God's name!
Shine on the pioneers
Those seekers of mental health
Craving simplicity
They traveled inward
Past themselves...
May all their little lights shine

Dire Straits 'Telegraph Road' reads as a Peak Oil warning.
A long time ago came a man on a track
Walking thirty miles with a sack on his back
And he put down his load where he thought it was the best
Made a home in the wilderness
He built a cabin and a winter store
And he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore
And the other travellers came riding down the track
And they never went further, no, they never went back
Then came the churches then came the schools
Then came the lawyers then came the rules
Then came the trains and the trucks with their loads
And the dirty old track was the telegraph road
Then came the mines - then came the ore
Then there was the hard times then there was a war
Telegraph sang a song about the world outside
Telegraph road got so deep and so wide
Like a rolling river. . .
And my radio says tonight it's gonna freeze
People driving home from the factories
Six lanes of traffic
Three lanes moving slow. . .
I used to like to go to work but they shut it down
I got a right to go to work but there's no work here to be found
Yes, and they say were gonna have to pay what's owed
Were gonna have to reap from some seed thats been sowed
And the birds up on the wires on the telegraph poles
They can always fly away from this rain and this cold
You can hear them singing out their telegraph code
All the way down the telegraph road
Seem to forget but I remember those nights
When life was just a bet on a race between the lights
You had your head on my shoulder you had your hand in my hair
Now you act a little colder like you don't seem to care
But believe in me babe and I'll take you away
From out of this darkness and into the day
From these rivers of headlights these rivers of rain
From the anger that lives on the streets with these days
cos Ive run every red light on memory lane
I've seen desperation explode into pain
And I dont want to see it again. . .
From all of these signs saying sorry but were closed
All the way down the telegraph road

Duran Duran - What Happens TomorrowThose tears on a gaping voice
Who's stretching arms match the hunger of mine
There lips will they never join
But always draw me closer and further entwined
With a promise dealer understand all freedoms fade away
To a point of view where many different pathways meet
And we're standing on this precipice with nothing much to gain save
But the deep blue screams of falling dreams with our next mov
Heaven hide your eyes
Heaven's eyes will never dry
The shades of a thousand steel
Come flashing by my face in the fury of war
In desolation and abandoned fields
The hungry make their stand when they'll stand for no more
Hear the passion in their voices see the heaven in their eyes
Their hopes and schemes are waiting dreams of less than paradise
And sometimes we make promises we never mean to keep
For blackmail is the only deal a promise dealer sees
Heaven hide your eyes
Heaven's eyes will never dry

Child, don't you worry
It's enough you're growing up in such a hurry
Brings you down the news they sell you
To put in your mind that all mankind is a failure
But nobody knows what's gonna happen tomorrow
We try not to show how frightened we are
If you let me I'll protect you however I can
You've got to believe
it'll be alright in the end
Fighting, because we're so close
There are times we punish those who we need the most
No, we can't wait for a saviour
Only got ourselves to blame for this behaviour
And nobody knows what's gonna happen tomorrow
We try not to show how frightened we are
Would seem lonely, if you were the only star in the night
You've got to believe
it'll be alright in the end
You've got to believe
it'll be alright again
time is a river
a silent icy river
pulls us all
running deep
deep and fast enough to get lost down in the flow
thrashing around me
tiny lives mean everything
And nobody knows what's gonna happen tomorrow
So don't let go, now we've come this far
Hope I have peace
Understand me
you're never alone
We've got to believe
it'll be alright in the end
nobody knows
You've got to believe
it'll be alright my friend
So don't let go
Unless we believe
it'll be alright again
Nobody knows

Status Quo (and others) - The Party Aint' Over Yet
there's a trouble wind blowing through my crazy life
i feel the chill begin, it's gonna be a long long night
i hear the thunder roll, but i dont fear the lightning strike
'cause deep inside i know
i'm gonna make it through alright
so let the walls come tumbling down
bring on the last sunset
i ain't moving to heartbreak town
the party ain't over yet
yeh, let the devil do his worst
but don't take any bets
that life has finally quenched my thirst
the party ain't over yet
every drop of rain that ever fell into my eyes
helps me ride this pain, they were a blessing in disguise
and i know in time, this'll soon be yesterday
there's nothing i can't climb, i've got the will to find the way
so let the walls come tumbling down
bring on the last sunset
i ain't moving to heartbreak town
the party ain't over yet
yeh, let the devil do his worst
but don't take any bets
that life has finally quenched my thirst
the party ain't over yet
so when the morning comes, i'll do more than just survive
i'll walk in to the sun, and live until i die
so let the walls come tumbling down
bring on the last sunset
i ain't moving to heartbreak town
the party ain't over yet
yeh, let the devil do his worst
but don't take any bets
that life has finally quenched my thirst
the party ain't over yet

Today as I walked into town I found myself singing "Another one bites the dust" (Queen).
Steve walks warily down the street,
With the brim pulled way down low
Aint no sound but the sound of his feet,
Machine guns ready to go
Are you ready, are you ready for this
Are you hanging on the edge of your seat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Another one bites the dust
Another one bites the dust
And another one gone, and another one gone
Another one bites the dust
Hey, Im gonna get you too
Another one bites the dust
How do you think Im going to get along,
Without you, when youre gone
You took me for everything that I had,
And kicked me out on my own
Are you happy, are you satisfied
How long can you stand the heat
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
To the sound of the beat
Chorus
...
But Im ready, yes Im ready for you
Im standing on my own two feet
Out of the doorway the bullets rip
Repeating the sound of the beat

Yeah, I dread to think what sort of injection techniques they're using to keep production rates stableAndy Hunt wrote:And the Stones . . . there's a case of 'advanced recovery' if ever I saw one!
Now there's a strange association, Freddie Mercury and peak oil ! Odd though isn't it, how even the most unlikely tracks make us think about all this. Or maybe it's that we have one track minds.RenewableCandy wrote:Today as I walked into town I found myself singing "Another one bites the dust" (Queen).
Here's a "short and sweet" Queen track written by Brian May, that I've always liked and I guess it has a nice anti-doomer tone to it ... at least the last bit (obviously BM wasn't thinking about PO exactly when he wrote it!):
Dear Friends
So dear friends
Your love has gone
Only tears to dwell upon
I dare not say
As the wind must blow
So a love is lost
A love is won
Go to sleep and dream again
Soon your hopes will rise
And then from all this gloom
Life can start anew
And therell be no crying soon
Although originally written about Pompeii and Herculaneum being destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius, Cities In Dust by Siouxsie and the Banshees kinda hits home.
Water was running; children were running
You were running out of time
Under the mountain, a golden fountain
Were you praying at the Lares shrine?
But ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Choking on the dirt and sand
Your former glories and all the stories
Dragged and washed with eager hands
But ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
your city lies in dust
Water was running; children were running
We found you hiding, we found you lying
Water was running; children were running
We found you hiding, we found you lying
your city lies in dust
ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Hot and burning in your nostrils
Pouring down your gaping mouth
Your molten bodies blanket of cinders
Caught in the throes .......
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Ohh oh your city lies in dust, my friend
Your city lies in dust
How terrifying. I bought the 12 inch version of that, aged about 16.syberberg wrote:Although originally written about Pompeii and Herculaneum being destroyed by Mt. Vesuvius, Cities In Dust by Siouxsie and the Banshees kinda hits home.
