Presuming that the vaccine proves satisfactory, there may be logistical problems in distribution.
It is reported that storage at very low temperatures is required. Most reports state minus seventy degrees.
Many media reports refer to the great cost and limited availability of freezers that get that cold. This is true, but for short term needs it is usual to use highly insulated containers together with an expendable or single use refrigerant.
Dry ice or solid carbon dioxide is just cold enough at minus 78 degrees.
Liquid nitrogen is plenty cold enough at minus 196 degrees.
Liquid nitrogen is arguably more reliable. If the product is immersed in the liquid then it must be cold enough, with no doubt.
Dry ice, being a solid might not completely surround the product, which might therefore not be cooled sufficiently.
Granules of dry ice are better than blocks in this respect.
Both products are plentiful at present, and RELATIVELY safe provided that proper precautions are taken.

Fascinating insight into how Totnes is transitioning.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... y-theories
"Like many people living in or around Totnes in Devon, David, who is in his 70s, has his own theories about coronavirus and its origins. Sitting in the armchair of his house, he says the pandemic is a secret plot to impose a totalitarian world government and a nefarious effort to crush freedom. He scrolls through Facebook, which he recently signed up to, to show many with similar beliefs.
David came to many of these ideas recently. When the pandemic hit, he started looking for answers. “I’m friends with a few people who are active in researching what is going on. I quickly made contact with others putting posts on the internet.
He is strongly opposed to 5G, believing mobile phone signals either transmit the virus or reduce our defences to it, and has said he would not accept a vaccine as it would involve injecting nanoparticles into the body that would allow people to be controlled."

A couple of decades ago people were going round with tin foil hats on to stop the authorities controlling them with radio waves. I suppose we have to bring these things up to date!!Potemkin Villager wrote:Fascinating insight into how Totnes is transitioning.

As far as you and I are concerned he might not have actually lost a dime but if his standing on the "Rich List" goes down that is a huge blow to his ego. You only have to look at what is happening to Trump to see what a blow to the ego can do to these mega rich people.vtsnowedin wrote:No unless he has to sell some today he has not lost a dime.kenneal - lagger wrote:You've just had it! In the case of Trump it is probably "would be" mega rich as, from what I have read, he faces bankruptcy if he loses the Presidency and the creditors move in. That's probably a reason why he is clinging on as long as possible and not looking towards his chances in 2024 as his daughter wants him to.

Covid has arrived in a nearby town, there have been 18 cases in Cardigan, local fingers are pointing at a group who went on a pub crawl ( which is quite short in a little town like Cardigan ). Some shops have now closed voluntarily or because of a staff member testing positive.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China
I've just read this article in the Guardian about how the dreaded online retailer named after the river has doubled its turnover at least once during the pandemic. I have now formulated what I think is the most realistic conspiracy theory of the source and spread of the pandemic and that is that it was started and spread by That God Awful Company, hearafter to be known by me as TGAC, in order for Jeff Bezos to increase his wealth.
It is, by far, more credible than anything that LJ has come up with!!
Edit - I'm sorry but the above URL doesn't work but it appears to be a problem with the board as I can paste the same URL into my browser and get straight through to the page. I'll try to get our software guru, JMB, to fix it. Also if you want to keep the powerswitch tab open you will have to right click the link and click on "open in new tab".

Virus is getting a bit closer to home. A teacher at my daughter's school has it. However, he had no contact with daughter, and she is returning to school after it was closed for 1 day.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China
A person I work with is off with Covid and another has just returned after being ill for a week (both confirmed following tests). There have been a few cases at my daughters secondary school but none of her immediate friends so she hasn't had to isolate. Has anyone who posts here had it yet?

Not knowingly, but several people close to me or that I work with have had it. My nephew has it currently and my brother's family is all isolating as a result. No one I know has had seriously symptoms - most of them have been asymptomatic and only know they had it because of a positive test.

My sister-in-law has had it and it kept her quite ill for over a month but has now recovered. Presently a step -Aunt on my wife's side who is Italian and 80 plus years old has it and is very ill. Both of these reside in Massachusetts.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China
I visited Yorkshire last Christmas, came back with something weird - not a cold or flu, but bits of each, lots of phlegm, desperately short of energy. Not fully 100% even now. At least one of my relatives was in contact with someone who'd been to Wutan.
My 38-year-old daughter was hospitalised with it in March. She lost her sense of smell and went deaf plus lost all energy. She's still not fully well.
My wife's uncle and aunt got it from people who had stayed at one of their holiday cottages in Newton Stewart. There was no direct physical contact: it was probably picked up when they went in to clean the cottage.
I have two elderly cousins in Sheffield who have died from other causes but complicated by having covid.

How pleasant to be able to relate our personal experience of this disease without suffering a rant in return.
I know that it is very often not a pleasant experience to have had the disease as an acquaintance of mine has told me so I do commiserate with all who have had it.
