Thirdly, why o why is he seen as being so vital to this government? Why chose this hill to die on? The synchronised support form cabinet ministers, the Downing St press conference, it just seems an absurd response.

Regarding the current nonsense in the MSM about Dominic Cummings. There is an ongoing war between two flanks of the ruling class. One of whom is represented by the globalists in the political class. And, these globalist representatives are to be found on both sides of parliament. The singular defining feature being that they are "liberals". Be they "left liberals" or "right liberals".
On the opposing side in the political class, we see old school Tory nationalists on the one hand and old school nation-state socialists on the other. The singular defining feature being an adherence to the concept of a nation state. Be they "left nation-statists" or "right nation-statists".
In recent history, the field of battle was Brexit here in the UK. The globalists lost that one and they are now using this virus to attempt to regain the ground they lost.
In other words, the primary political dichotomy of our age is Localism versus Globalism and the Left and Right are now only representative of a second order dichotomy. That is why both the Left and Right are to be found on both sides of that primary divide.
You can take your pick which side you think represents your own interests. But, lets not pretend that these sides do not exist.
All of the above being the case, it is so utterly, laughably, depressingly transparent that all of this bullshit about Cummings is part of that ongoing war between those two different flanks of the ruling class. With the potentially outgoing globalist flank, still holding all of the reigns of the means of cultural transmission, using all of those means to attempt to fatally undermine the front man of the other flank by taking down one of his generals.
Everything else, including all of the faux (or, even more laughably, genuinely expressed) moral outrage in the MSM, on social media and forums such as this is irrelevant details. This may be said, if one was being honest, irrespective of which flank of that ruling class one's own interests may happen to coincide with.

I agree with all that, my point is they could have orchestrsted an apology, regret, slap on the wrist, resign, low profile for a while, before returning after being seen to have 'done his time'.stumuz1 wrote: Because it what comes next that he needs Cummings on board.

They could have found a way to retain Cummings skills and input, without the PR nightmare.
No they couldn't. No, such is the hatred of Cummings in the press, top civil servants and among some Parliamentarians that they would pursue him beyond the grave if they could. If he had been lurking in the background they would still have gone for him for the reasons LJ quoted above and in vengeance for Brexit and a hundred and one other matters. The Tories have four and a half years to the next election and a whopping majority so they can stick it out.clv101 wrote:....................I agree with all that, my point is they could have orchestrsted an apology, regret, slap on the wrist, resign, low profile for a while, before returning after being seen to have 'done his time'.

If the press keep going on about it it will become obvious to a very bored public majority that this is just a witch hunt or vendetta against an individual and the public sympathy will go to the individual. There isn't much of an approval rating for the press; they are only slightly above estate agents in the polling!

I think a battle is going on between the established order (civil service, media, poloitico's, talking heads industry, zombie industry) and the disrupter.clv101 wrote: I agree with all that, my point is they could have orchestrsted an apology, regret, slap on the wrist, resign, low profile for a while, before returning after being seen to have 'done his time'.

If he is forced out, then the established order and vested interests, win. It is a tactic admission that the established order is in charge.
They may win, who knows?
BBC admitting it's a biased left wing schill,
The BBC has admitted a Newsnight monologue by Emily Maitlis on the Dominic Cummings affair "did not meet our standards of due impartiality".
Ms Maitlis caused a politic storm when she opened last night's BBC Two programme with the words: "Dominic Cummings broke the rules. The country can see that and it’s shocked the Government cannot.

I'm just listening to Boris on the BBC at the moment and I have been struck by how much of a One Nation Tory he is and much of that comes down, I think, to Dominic Cummings influence. Much of the Brexit strategy and that for the last election was Cummings doing and that targeted the northern working class vote. Judging by the success of those campaigns, Cummings seems to be more atuned to what the working class wants than any Tory for many a year and also than much of the Labour Party. Perhaps that is why there is so much hatred from the Labour benches. The fact that Cummings is bringing the Tory Party more to the centre is a reason why he is hated by the right wing of the party.
As LJ wrote earlier, Cummings is being attacked from both sides of the globalist political spectrum and a lot of gullible people are being conned into joining the witch hunt which accounts for the clamour.
