Aurora - for once a voice of sanity and common sense... I applaud you Sir!
Fatties, wake up, end the excuses, eat less, cut the junk food crap and get jogging!!! Not so f***ing hard, is it?

Peace always has been and always will be an intermittent flash of light in a dark history of warfare, violence, and destruction
obesity
I'm sure there are individual differences in metabolic rates, and in other physical/chemical/hormonal factors, which mean that, in order to stay within a healthy weight range, each person has to consume an appropriate amount of food and do an appropriate amount of exercise for their own particular set of body variables. (That means I find it hard to disagree with Aurora, though I would probably state it less strongly .
Energy consumed has to either be burnt as fuel to do work, or stored as fat. For those with medical problems, it must be very hard, but the above principle surely still applies. Their particular set of body variables mean they will have to be very mindful of food intake and exercise levels.
(Not intended to offend anyone... just my thoughts).

Funny how it's not that simple when you're the one living it. It can't just be a matter of self-discipline; I had the discipline to live on a very tight budget for the last two years to pay down debt and will be paying off my mortgage this summer. Some people would probably find that as near impossible as dieting is for me. (Not buy new shoes? Not go out on the weekend? Horror!)
That said; I made room in my budget for Slimming World and have lost 9 lbs.

Thanks Mr. G I'll take a look for it.MrG wrote:Keela.. lot's of interesting research on Anandamide which is worth reading up on. It modulate's that hunger / satiety 'switch' your talking about from what I recall.
@ Aurora and others who present the simplest solution. I think we ALL understand that. As a biology teacher I agree totally.
Yet I also understand that some folk:
- have lower appetites
- tend to exercise more and
- perhaps even have a higher basal metabolic rate than others.
It all makes a difference to how easy they find it to maintain a healthy body weight.
However, for folk who are struggling with their weight, the matter is complicated by the factors the rest of us have been discussing.
We now live in an age where:
- food production is highly industrialised
- the cheapest foods contain the fewest nutrients
- unsuitable food is constantly available at every checkout
- advertisers promote their foods as fashion statements etc.
- we are all under pressure and seek easy "comfort" (and food is easy)
- we do not need to exercise as part of our daily lives and many folk don't
- modern symbols of success mostly are labour saving
So anything that can be discovered that will help modern folk cope with modern life can only be good.
Well ....... until that "modern life" disintegrates anyway!

You should all listen to yourselves.
Hunger switch. Metabolism. Famine storage mode. Thrifty phenotype. Modulate the hunger / satiety 'switch'.
This may come as a shock folks. Most of the terminology mentioned above didn't even exist in the fifties / sixties and guess what - people, generally, weren't overweight.
Some may have been depressed but because cheap processed food wasn't readily available, they didn't have the opportunity to self-pityingly gorge themselves on trash.
Today, everything has changed.
I'm depressed.
I'm unhappy.
I'm in debt.
My boss hates me.
My partner doesn't understand me.
My mortgage interest repayments have gone up by 0.25%
I can't control the kids.
My social worker isn't helping me.
Etc. Etc. Etc..
Every conceivable excuse it would seem to avoid the blindingly obvious truth. I'M EATING TOO MUCH and NOT EXERCISING ENOUGH.
"Things are different today,"

Mother needs something today to calm her down...

I'm hippest, no really.
In defence of Aurora, he did not get personal. It is never a good idea to discuss individual specifics and I think we should refrain from that here.

I never get personal unless a member tries 'lording' it over the rest of us.

By her own admission in previous posts, screamifyouwanttogofaster has painted a picture of her outlook on food and exercise:
Great! I'd also recommend staying healthy by eating non-processed, nutritious food and by actively exercising on a regular basis.
my idea as a teenager that I could eat 3 bars of chocolate a day and lose weight since it would only be 800 calories- health concerns seemed meaningless then, I just wanted to find the easiest way to be socially acceptable ie thin
And yet in the next sentence, she is capable of contradicting herself:How many other "treatments" do doctors recommend that have a 5% success rate! We give up and say "sod it" and eat crap. We start an exercise program, to lose weight and tone up. When we haven't lost enough lbs and don't look like a supermodel after 3 weeks we give up and turn on the TV.
Health? Nutrition? Exercise? Activity?Instead of constantly going on about obesity, they should be talking about health, instead of diets and deprivation, nutrition and instead of exercise, activity. Yes like cycling or walking places.... oh such a radical idea, I mean why do that when you can go by car and then go to the gym later (or not).
Great! I'd also recommend staying healthy by eating non-processed, nutritious food and by actively exercising on a regular basis.
