Ye gods....tapes? LOL

But digitising in is so easy. All thats needed is the appropriate cable and some recording software. Unfortunately of course it is real time.

Just digitise as you listen through your collection.

Grab yourself a free copy of adobe audition v3 beta and then you can wash the recordings through a de-noiser and get rid of the annoying hiss of tapes (or crackle of vinyl).

Or of course, you could just cut out the entire process and download all the rips on a torrent :) Kind of semi legal if you already own the originals - well, morally correct(ish).

I jalouse that they might, therefore, still sell them. It's worth asking around. We have about 3 spares that I bought in a fit of Doom one day.
I've got the new needle, it's getting it on properly that's the problem.

I draw the line at torrents, copying your own originals for personal use seems like it ought to be fair use (it is in the States, and mooted over here) but downloading copies has too many bad connotations.

None of which applies for recordings over 50 years old- I do have some records that old, but not many.

Being an open source fanatic, I'd prefer Audacity to Adobe Audition as well.

Now all I need is the record player...

If you bought and paid for the originals I wouldn't be to outraged imagining a digital download.

I don't think audacity has the clean up abilities of audition / cool edit.

PS. I am an audio professional.

Good luck with getting your deck up and running - garage sale could be a good source?

Is this the sort of thing you want?

They also do an amp to go with it. Maplin used to do one made by Ion for £79, which I have, but I can't find it now.

It's a thought, but something certainly a heck of a lot cheaper and possibly not literally new.

I'm sure any hi-fi system plugged into sound-card inputs will achieve some result, but probably not as good, introducing a lot more noise.

I will acknowledge your experience then.

Thing is, though, I still like the idea of supporting open-source- if not so many take it up, it won't get better. And I think it's one model for avoiding the sort of commercialism that probably needs killing off on the downslope. But, if doing the job matters most...

I'm mainly looking at eBay and a charity shop in Middlesborugh, but the latter only has a full system (the one I was looking at is £35, made by Technics and I'd guess dating to around the very early 80s or late 70s. Icludes turntable, amp, radio and single tape deck.)

Garage sales are prety thin on the ground in my experience, and the last one I went to was pretty bereft of interesting items.

Freedom by Amos Lee

Don't wanna be a martyr in this war
Don't wanna hear the same excuses any more
That everything's a threat and it's only gonna get worse if we let it

Don't wanna blame the rich for what they got
Don't point a finger at the poor for what they have not
Though the politician and the priest live in the belly of the beast because we fed it

Freedom is seldom found by beatin' someone to the ground
Tellin' em how everything is gonna be now, yeah,

Now if the tables were turned tell me how you would feel
Somebody busted up into your house tellin' you to stay still
While the leaders will deny defeat, the innocent they testify by dyin' in the street

Freedom is seldom found by beatin' someone to the ground
Tellin' em how everything is gonna be
Freedom is seldom found by beatin' someone to the ground
Tellin' em how everything is gonna be now

Cheaper than the model I saw at Richer Sounds (£69.99). Might consider it for a mere thirty quid...

Bare Necessities from the Jungle Book :D

Look for the bare necessities
The simple bare necessities
Forget about your worries and your strife
I mean the bare necessities
Old Mother Nature's recipes
That brings the bare necessities of life
