Adam2, other mods,
Given that we now know this is a global event of enormous magnitude, could I suggest the Index page be expanded to include a COVID-19 category?
This ever expanding and somewhat disparate (desparate!) thread could be moved there. And then individual topics set up, by participants to suit their particular preferences, much like the rest of the PS site arrangement?
Eg -
Latest news UK
Latest news Global
Preparations and practical responses
Academic papers, graphs and data
Solidarity and psych support
Managing stocks, sourcing and growing food
Economic impacts
Gallows Humour (for those who like that sort of thing)

When you're dealing with exponential growth, the time to act is when it feels too early.

London lockdown imminent -

According to one person briefed on the proposal, there would be a full lockdown of the capital with only one person allowed to leave home at a time, with no entry to local shopping areas.
Supermarkets would be guarded by police, while pharmacies would be among the few other shops to remain open.
Two officials briefed on the proposals said residents and business would be given just 12 hours’ notice of the new restrictions. They could initially be in place for about a fortnight.

I rather doubt that any London lockdown will be either total or effectively enforced.
There will be presumably be exceptions for essential workers, such as healthcare, law enforcement, power industry and others.
I also doubt that there is the appetite for truly effective enforcement, which would include shooting those who break the rules.
More likely IMHO that the "lockdown" will consist of closing public attractions including most shops, restricting public transport, and telling people not to travel unless essential.

I'm currently self isolating but wonder whether this is a good long term strategy - I wonder if it might be a more potentially survivable strategy for me to limit my exposure by wearing a mask BUT going shopping every day to get as many supplies in as I can whilst I can.
Thoughts?
I'm self isolating because I don't have a spleen. However, I am 56 years old, very fit and healthy. Despite the lack of the spleen I am rarely ill apart from the occasional cold and have never had flu despite losing my spleen 37 years ago.
Edited K-L to add "don't."

I'd get some more supplies in over the next couple of days if I were you. It is getting riskier all the time, but the risk is still quite low at the moment if you are outside London.boisdevie wrote:I'm currently self isolating but wonder whether this is a good long term strategy - I wonder if it might be a more potentially survivable strategy for me to limit my exposure by wearing a mask BUT going shopping every day to get as many supplies in as I can whilst I can.

If this happens the UK will never be the same again.Mean Mr Mustard II wrote:London lockdown imminent -

I forsee rioting, home invasions, wilful defiance of the lockdown.
The authorities will need to be armed.

Large part of west London currently without water or electricity.

London is going to be an absolute disaster, not just this power and water issue, but in coming weeks there's likely to be all manner of problems with basic infrastructure, health, food, transport etc.UndercoverElephant wrote:Large part of west London currently without water or electricity.

So, I don't feel so mildly embarrassed about filling my homebrew bottles with tapwater and the drop of thin bleach as Adam2 advised. The only thing it cost me was an hour of my time last week.
Think I'll go double down on that initial prep this afternoon. Being as extended lack of water forces a bug-out.

This I view with great concern, even if unrelated to the virus, it will add to gloom, doom, and panic.UndercoverElephant wrote:Large part of west London currently without water or electricity.
