If the Italians, Swedish, Canadians, Dutch, Australians and Californians can manage it why can't we?

The Italian situation is that the Italian state power company Enel began replacing traditional electromechanical meters with electronic meters (AMM technology) in 2001. The full project involves rolling out 30 million meters over 4 years. By July 2005, 24.6 million meters had been replaced with the new AMM system. Of these, 21.7 million are being remotely managed and 21.6 million are being bi-monthly read. About 40,000 meters are being installed every day.

Come on UK power companies!
It is important to consider costs vs. benefits quite carefully. It's an expensive business installing smart meters and there's no guarantee that everybody, or even most people, would significantly and sustainably change their energy consumption habits as a result. There may be other, less expensive ways in which the same amount of energy savings could be more certainly achieved, in which case that might be a better use for the money. In any case, this is under active consideration by the Government at the moment; check out http://www.dti.gov.uk/files/file35042.pdf. Ofgem's recent response is available on their website http://www.ofgem.gov.uk under reference 22/07

I suppose it could be an argument for using incandescent light bulbs though - to reduce the load on your central heating boiler!

It looks from this that smart metering may well be happening.

Since 13th April 2006
665 kwh of imported electricity at peak rate.
96 kwh imported electricity night rate
2760 kwh generated elecricity.
However because of our metering system I dont know how much electricity we actually used. :D

So you be one of those rich folks who live on the hill, whilst us poor folks have to make do with lamps made from old shoe laces dipped in cockroach fat.
