"We Took the Wrong Step Years Ago" - Hawkwind

Think about the things that we should have done before
The way things are going the end is about to fall.
We took the wrong step years ago
We took the wrong step years ago

Take a look around and see the warnings close at hand
Already weeds are writing their scriptures in the sand
We took the wrong step years ago
We took the wrong step years ago

The morning sun is rising, casting rays out across the land,
Already nature's calling, take heed of the warning,
We took the wrong step years ago
We took the wrong step years ago

Hey that's cheating! Recycling a song from page two of this thread!
But well worth the second mention, as this for me is the peak oil song!

I was listening to their album Doremi Fasol Latido the other day, which ends with the combination of "Time We Left this World Today" and "The Watcher". Great double helping of apocalyptic Sci-fi! In The Watcher our heroes have indeed left this world and are looking back from space at a world imprisoned screaming with pain. Lemmy's drawn out groan of "this is the eeeeeend nooooowww", which closes the album, is in itself worth the price of the CD!
Time we left this world today
Time we left this world today
Time we left this world today
So many people seem to say
"Time we left this world today"
They watch you as you seem to say
"Time we left this world today"
They watch you as you walk the street
Cast sly glances at who you meet
Brain police are not far behind
Trying to make you lose your minds
Time we left this world today
Watch you as you walk the streets
Make you sit in your house and say
"Time we left this world today"
So many people seem to say
"Time we left this world today
The Watcher.

We are looking in on you now
What do you think you can do now
You're so very small from way out here
The last thing you will feel is fear
I gave you the chance to do the right thing
I gave you the chance to do the bright thing
Now my sense is so disgusted
Re-affirm you can't be trusted
A world imprisoned screams with pain
There are no leaders you can blame
Human greed has destroyed your sphere
And there's no room for you out here
This is the end now

Ooops! I had a feeling it might have been mentioned! The old memory cells aren't what they used to be (for some reason).

Nice lyrics to those other two tracks . . . Hawkwind lyrics are always quite poignant, if a little clumsy sometimes.
Lives of great men all remind us we may make our lives sublime
And departing leave behind us footprints in the sands of time
Of hewn stones the sacred circle where the wizened sages sat
Let us try to remember all the times where they were at.
So your thoughts they were expecting

assault and battery on the human anatomy
Assault and battery on the human anatomy, man.
Not the best bit of grammar ever!!! Great lyrics though!!

Hawkwind in one of their moments of inspiration:

Has this one been mentioned before?

We'll be fighting in the streets
With our children at our feet
And the morals that they worship will be gone
And the men who spurred us on
Sit in judgement of all wrong
They decide and the shotgun sings the song

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again

The change, it had to come
We knew it all along
We were liberated from the foe, that' all
And the world looks just the same
And history ain't changed
'Cause the banners, they all flown in the last war

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
No, no!

I'll move myself and my family aside
If we happen to be left half alive
I'll get all my papers and smile at the sky
For I know that the hypnotized never lie

Do ya?

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

There's nothing in the street
Looks any different to me
And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye
And the parting on the left
Is now the parting on the right
And the beards have all grown longer overnight

I'll tip my hat to the new constitution
Take a bow for the new revolution
Smile and grin at the change all around me
Pick up my guitar and play
Just like yesterday
Then I'll get on my knees and pray
We don't get fooled again
Don't get fooled again
No, no!

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!

Meet the new boss

Not peak oil per se, but something my band have just recorded. And I'm aware of peak oil. Does that count?

Jesse James

Excuse the whistle playing. We need to re-record that.

Before the Oil Wells Ran Dry by David Rovics

Were you drinking wine from Argentina
Or Indonesian coffee
Did you take some in a plane
And go fly across the country
Did you go to work the next week
Drive your daily twenty miles
Stop off at Sears to see
The latest Chinese styles
When you did these things
Did you wonder how or why
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

Were you watching the news
Did you wonder when
They?d bomb another country
Or start up the draft again
As you tried to stop the war
That might decide the planet?s fate
Did you stop to question
How that food got on your plate
As you stuck your fork
Into that slice of pie
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

When you went back to college
To get another PhD
Or you went into the studio
To record one more CD
Did it occur to you
That your time might be spent better
Digging in the earth
Or learning to knit a sweater
Did you prepare for all the changes
Or at least pretend to try
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

When the cars and planes stopped running
And the dollar hit the floor
And the hordes of hungry children
Were knocking on your door
When unemployed men in the streets said
Blame the Arabs for our plight
Did you shout with dirt held high
?Farmers of the world unite?
Did you ride an ox into town
And say ?join the Green Revolution or die?
In the years before the oil wells ran dry

Nothing But Flowers by Talking Heads

Here we stand
Like an Adam and an Eve
Waterfalls
The Garden of Eden
Two fools in love
So beautiful and strong
The birds in the trees
Are smiling upon them
From the age of the dinosaurs
Cars have run on gasoline
Where, where have they gone?
Now, it's nothing but flowers

There was a factory
Now there are mountains and rivers
you got it, you got it

We caught a rattlesnake
Now we got something for dinner
we got it, we got it

There was a shopping mall
Now it's all covered with flowers
you've got it, you've got it

If this is paradise
I wish I had a lawnmower
you've got it, you've got it

Years ago
I was an angry young man
I'd pretend
That I was a billboard
Standing tall
By the side of the road
I fell in love
With a beautiful highway
This used to be real estate
Now it's only fields and trees
Where, where is the town
Now, it's nothing but flowers
The highways and cars
Were sacrificed for agriculture
I thought that we'd start over
But I guess I was wrong

Once there were parking lots
Now it's a peaceful oasis
you got it, you got it

This was a Pizza Hut
Now it's all covered with daisies
you got it, you got it

I miss the honky tonks,
Dairy Queens, and 7-Elevens
you got it, you got it

And as things fell apart
Nobody paid much attention
you got it, you got it

I dream of cherry pies,
Candy bars, and chocolate chip cookies
you got it, you got it

We used to microwave
Now we just eat nuts and berries
you got it, you got it

This was a discount store,
Now it's turned into a cornfield
you got it, you got it

Don't leave me stranded here
I can't get used to this lifestyle

Down By The Seaside - Led Zeppelin

Down by the seaside. See the boats go sailin'
Can the people hear, What the little fish are sayin'

Oh, oh, people turned away. Oh, people turned away

Down in the city streets, see all the folk go racin', racin'
No time left, to pass the time of day

People turned away. People turned away
So far away, so far away

See how they run, see how they run, see how they run, see how they run.

Do you still do the twist
Do you find you remember things that well
I wanna tell you... Some go twistin' every day
though sometimes it's awful hard to tell

Out in the country, hear the people singin'
Singin' 'bout their growin', knowin' where they're goin'

Oh, oh, oh, oh, people turned away
Yes, the people turned away

Sing loud for the sunshine, pray hard for the rain
And show your love for Lady Nature. And she will come back again

The people turned away
people turned away

Beatles - Peak Oil visionaries?

When I get older losing my hair
many years from now
will you still be sending me a valentine
birthday greeting, bottle of wine
If I'd been out till quarter to three
would you lock the door
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

You'll be older too
And if you say the word
I could stay with you

I could be handy mending a fuse
when your lights have gone
You can knit a sweater by the fireside
Sunday mornings, go for a ride
Doing the garden, digging the weeds
Who could ask for more
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

Every summer we can rent a cottage on the
Isle of Wight, if it's not too dear
We shall scrimp and save
Grandchildren on your knee
Vera, Chuck, and Dave

Send me a postcard, drop me a line
stating point of view
indicate precisely what you mean to say
yours sincerely wasting away
Give me your answer fill in a form
mine forever more
Will you still need me
Will you still feed me
When I'm sixty-four

George Harrison -

Have you seen the little piggies
Crawling in the dirt
And for all the little piggies
Life is getting worse
Always having dirt to play around in.

Have you seen the bigger piggies
In their starched white shirts
You will find the bigger piggies
Stirring up the dirt
Always have clean shirts to play around in.

In their sties with all their backing
They don't care what goes on around
In their eyes there's something lacking
What they need's a damn good whacking.

Everywhere there's lots of piggies
Living piggy lives
You can see them out for dinner
With their piggy wives
Clutching forks and knives to eat their bacon.

City-Crazy by Bridget St. John
I'm a little city-crazy - it is getting out of hand
I need to change my rhythm for the rhythm of the land
Living in the city's grip I feel I lose control
As she reaches for my body she is hoping for my soul

There's a wilderness of buildings that are swallowing the ground
They tie us to their chaos and they try to drag us down
People chasing hours cannot laugh away the years
I'm bewildered by the city for she turns my fun to fear

I am tired of rushing nowhere - I've been dusty far too long
I need to leave and go where I can feel that I belong
I need to sleep on shingle - yes I wish to step in sand
To move in time to tides and winds and things I understand
Incidentally, does anyone else remember Bridget St. John?

Walking Through A Wasted Land by Richard Thompson
I'm walking through a wasted land
Of soft sell concrete and rust
What ever happened to this country?
Where is the hand you can trust?
Walk down, walk down, walk down

I remember when a farmer was ashamed
If he never put his hand to a plough
You can buy a lot of shame with your money
He's riding in a limousine now
Walk down, walk down, walk down, walk down!

Sweat is the name of this town
It's an ugly old, dirty old disgrace
And now that the steel's shut down
It's fear puts the sweat in a man's face
Walk down, walk down, walk down

Oh now I should have a break like you
But somebody stacked up the decks
Heads are going to roll some day
If we ever get this yoke off our necks
Walk down, walk down, walk down, oh

Well I'm walking through a wasted land
I'm walking through a wasted land
Where is the future we planned
I'm walking through a wasted land
Walk down, walk down, walk down, walk down
