I hope, for all our sakes, it is, RC.

This is not The Onion.
On Wednesday, the winners of the World Food Prize were announced at the US State Department, with Secretary of State John Kerry in attendance. This year’s award will be shared among three scientists: Marc Van Montagu, Mary-Dell Chilton and Robert Fraley, all pioneers in agricultural biotechnology.

Fraley is currently the chief technology officer at biotech giant Monsanto, while Mary-Dell Chilton is the founder of Syngenta Biotechnology, another prominent biotech company. In awarding the prize, which comes along with a $250,000 cash award, the Iowa-based World Food Prize Foundation reasons that genetically modified crops offer higher yields, and are more resilient to pestilence and adverse weather.

October 2013 ~ Global marches against Monsanto

People from around the world participated in a global "March Against Monsanto" on Saturday (12th October) calling for the permanent boycott of GMOs, hoping to build on the protests that took place in May. Monsanto, a company estimated to be worth 55 billion dollars, has found it harder to gain a foothold in Europe than in the rest of the world and it has abandoned plans to win approval for growing new types of genetically modified maize, sugar beet and soybean there.
Monsanto insists its food is safe and calim that its innovations help farmers produce more using fewer natural resources. However, there is widespread concern say its seeds destroy the soil and its "Terminator" seeds are designed to make constant repurchase necessary because they last only one generation. The seeds must also be used with a variety of the company's other products such as fertilizers, fungicides and pesticides. Critics say that no long-term, independent studies were carried out on GMOs before their introduction for human consumption. (More on GM)

A few eye-openers for you. Happy reading!

Edit: a bit more about that Monsanto magazine infiltration.

Unfortunately the EU pesticide ban isn't across the board, and B&Q amongst others, are selling a bottle by the name of Provado Ultimate Bug Killer, that contains a neo-nicotinoid.

Those damn Yankees are up to no good again.
Genetically engineered trees are being planted in the southeast United States to produce paper and the wood pellets used in power plants. Created by ArborGen, a biotechnology company, these GMO trees threaten the environment in multiple different ways. GMO trees require twice as much water as regular trees and spread their pollen and seeds long distances, resulting in a decrease in tree diversity.
That's understating the case.

RT article.
In September, Russia endorsed the Rules for the State Registration of GMO and GMO-containing Products. The law enforces compulsory registration of all products containing GM components.

Also in September, Russian authorities temporarily suspended the import and sale of Monsanto’s genetically modified corn after a French study suggested it may be linked to cancer. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered regulatory agencies to consider a possible ban on all GMO imports into Russia.

From one of the comments in the article
My gawd! Dont believe this bullshit. Ermakova is not a scientist, she is a bureaucrat, the best proof of it is that she bases her views on pseudoscientific study by Seralini, which was thought to "prove" that "GM causes tumours in rats", until it was found that study was made awfully without proper statistics and methods
Conveniently missing out that Seralini used the Monsanto methods, just did it for two years instead of three months.

Not in newspapers, but on Radio 4 this week is a series called Borgen, at 1500 starting Monday. You can hear it on iPlayer Radio. Its plot is associated with current agricultural policyincluding GMO. Gets quite contentious, but it does mean people get a smattering of the current hidden politics.
