To be honest Vortex, I find that you are bit of a Jekyll and Hyde! For this post, you appear to be in total denial.
Having just come from the US, I have been exposed to profligate energy usage, both on the journey, and whilst there.

Although I understand the Peak Oil numbers, the raw sensations of vibrant day-to-day life seem to make a mockery of the doomy stuff.

Also, when reading some posts - mainly on other fora - I have sudden fears that I have been sucked into a cult!

I suppose some of the inhabitants of Hiroshima on that final sunny day were organising a picnic for the kids ... when ...

I'll be like that on Day Zero! Surprised!
Fair point Vortex and I hope my post didn't come across as agressive in any way, more heart-felt.

I have never managed to visit the US, but I do understand your point about profligate energy usage (well put) and it is thus a valid point about the slack in the system. Hopefully this will give us a slight breather before the SHTF. In my opinion I don't see this lasting more than a couple of years, but those couple of years will be important for people who are attempting to prepare and sort out their financial situation which scares me a good bit.

Not sure there will be a Day Zero, maybe in terms of mental acceptance there might be. I think there will be a lot of difficult days ahead mainly because so much change will have to happen before equilibrium can exist again. The depleting of oil (and natural gas) is a heck of a hard thing to adjust to - most of us on here who may have been aware of it for some years are (I believe) nowhere near that level of adjustment, with a couple of notable exceptions.

It is all quite daunting - not made any easier by the fact we have to live in the current "alice-in-wonderland" world whilst thinking and discussing the expected reality of a world hit by an economic tsunami that will impact everybody without exception.

We had better enjoy the next couple of years and try to get ourselves into position to survive the ride that lies before us as it will be like one we have never had before!

Just a gut feel.

I think the wheels will start to fall off around 2009 (economic instability - interest rate rises, people losing homes etc).

I don't think ration books/cards will be distributed in the UK until after 2012, maybe 2015.

I would punt 20% depletion post-peak as being the "threshold" for things to start going seriously wrong if preparations are not made in time.
