Re: Failing police forces.
Disgust at the de-facto legalisation of shoplifting is growing among both large retail groups, and individual small shopkeepers.

Probably the only thing we can do is go back to shops where everything is kept behind the counter and fetched when requested.

Re: Failing police forces.
There is a new variant of that style of shop. Customers are only admitted to a small area in the centre of the shop, this contains no merchandise. All the goods for sale are arranged on shelves around the perimeter. This area is separated from the customers by a masonry wall about 1.2 meters high and then a toughened glass or polycarbonate barrier up to the ceiling. The shopkeeper is on the other side of this barrier from the customers, and passes the goods out via a hatch after receiving payment.Default0ptions wrote: ↑17 Sep 2023, 00:30 Probably the only thing we can do is go back to shops where everything is kept behind the counter and fetched when requested.

This is hated by the left/political correctness department/poverty lobby.

Argos have been doing this for decades! Screwfix too... I guess these stores are pretty much immune to shoplifting.
Supermarkets 'click and collect' works well.

Particularly blatant theft caught on CCTV. The thieves obviously have little fear of being caught.

I know quite a few lads who, wherever possible, buy their shopping off shoplifters. They end up having to buy quite large amounts of things you normally buy in small amounts, but it's a lot cheaper. They seem to think it's a natural result of external financial pressures and very much place the blame on TPTB. They think it's a mainly victimless crime and seem quite proud of what they get for so little.

I spoke to our local Screwfix manager.
He said that their profits were high during the Click And Collect phase of COVID.
Nothing to do with shoplifting ... just the increased efficiency of closing the shop part.

I think this is the beginning of a much larger societal breakdown. Our group behaviours can only ever be policed by consent and once that consent is gone there remains only live ammunition martial law or anarchy
Re: Failing police forces.
Yeah, I'd take the con on that one. If only because all the other claims of the beginning of the End Times spanning half a century now without much to show for it, the odds of it finally arriving when nothing has even budged human population growth recently seems reasonable.Default0ptions wrote: ↑23 Sep 2023, 00:16 I think this is the beginning of a much larger societal breakdown.

Large number of London police force are refusing to carry weapons after one officer is charged with murder for shooting an unarmed (black) man who was sitting in his car.

Yeah. I guess mass organised and repeated looting and shoplifting completely unresponded to by the civil authorities doesn’t constitute “the End Times “johnny wrote: ↑24 Sep 2023, 02:52Yeah, I'd take the con on that one. But it certainly is a problem.

Seems like an...interesting?...reaction to an office pulling a possible bad act?

Re: Failing police forces.
Quite true. Particularly when it is by design, which is different than not having the resources to drop the hammer in this type of nonsense.Default0ptions wrote: ↑24 Sep 2023, 13:07Yeah. It is. In the large cities that seem to be experimenting with the philosophy of "oh just let those shoplifters get some free stuff, and they'll calm down and not do it again". Strikes me as silly but it is their right to experiment with silly ideas I suppose. When you drive off all the downtown businesses and make them unlivable for the non-homeless population it seems as though it is a self defeating process though.Default0ptions wrote: But it certainly is a problem.

Re: Failing police forces.
“ It turns out that we really do need the police after all. Do you remember a few years ago when blue cities all over the nation wanted to defund the police? Needless to say, that didn’t work out too well. Wherever police budgets were slashed, crime rates shot up. Today, we are in the midst of a massive crime wave that is sweeping the country. In fact, it has gotten so bad that even many our most liberal politicians are desperate to restore law and order. But that won’t be so easy, because after everything that has transpired blue cities are discovering that they are having a really difficult time finding enough warm bodies to serve in their crime-ridden communities.”
