When it started using defeat device software in 2008, VW installed it with the EA189 diesel engine. The software was subsequently added to the newer EA288 engine.
EA288 is the new Cat 6 diesel. If this is true, the cheating is much more extensive and on-going and NO VW diesel emission can be trusted.
It holes the 'few rogue elements' excuse below the water line.
VW now reporting 800K cars fail to meet CO2 emissions rating. This is hardly news to any car owner - all cars in the real world use more fuel than the official figures.
However, I assume VW is going hands up to official cheating on ratings tests, and will be liable for billions in uncollected taxes.
I suspect my own car will be affected again. I wonder if any other manufacture will come clean on this one.
btw I've been monitoring the second hand Nissan Leaf market for a couple of years, as I expect my next car to be one. In the last month the number on the market has fallen sharply, and asking prices have risen by about 10%.
I guess a lot of environmentally concious drivers have decided enough is enough for the ICE machine, albeit a tiny minority of the total market. New sales of Leafs have tanked on low fuel prices.
