It's fairly feasible that the states could have been totally self-reliant in almost everything. It really had no need to trade with anyone, it was such a vast and resourced country.

Instead they and the rest of us selfish idiots had to fúck up the climate, which will put paid to any notion of self-sufficiency.

The US would only need to improve vehicle efficiency to current European new car standards for it become a net oil exporter on current production.

If everyone in the US drove the smallest car on the market that they actually need, they would be a top 5 exporting nation.

I think it would take quite a bit more then that and of course you couldn't change over the whole fleet at once. A lot of suburban commuters would need to move closer to their jobs or at least to a mass transit hub. Plenty of room for improvement though.

the USA still has vast mineral and fossil fuel resources as well as potential for considerable renewable energy sources. Add that into the fact that the US could cut consumption dramatically with little net harm and they will be in pretty good shape compared to almost any other country you can mention.
Well, then they've no need to export their armed forces. They may as well keep them for domestic use.

Oh. Wait....

Their present and recent deployments are what allows us to live "in the manner to which we have grown accustomed". Even the UK receives benefits that most Brits seem unaware of.

Quite correct. We have helped develop and install the most opressive surveilance system in history. The Stasi dreamt of what we've got. The US will now buy in the expertise to adopt the same thing over there. Homeland Security is such a comforting phrase....

IIRC we've got 1/80th of the World population and about 80% of the CCTV.

Maudibe has outlined a 'People's Future' what is actually being built is a Police State. IIRC (again) haven't the Police in the US been given immunity from prosecution recently if somebody gets killed during a Period of Tension? And I'll bet that the designation of Tension is suitabily vague... But then a majority of South Africans who were allowed an opinion thought BOSS was good too.
