Early on in the oil and gas age, I believe that petrol engines were sometimes run on natural gas liquids straight from the well without refining or treatment.
I recall reading somewhere (probably TOD) that vehicles using ethanol were suffering from component parts wearing out a lot sooner than their specified shelf-life
