If any more of these start happening, people will have to start crossing the Atlantic by ocean liner again, which if done right could cut carbon usage and energy costs:

My PV panels have absolutely rocked today, I wonder if the effect on Manchester Airport had anything to do with it.foodimista wrote:Innit nice to have skies without vapour trails?

It has been great not to have planes buzzing over head all day. Living near Belfast, we are close to the flight path into Belfast City Airport (now called George Best City Airport), so it was really noticeable the lack of aircraft in the sky!
Made me think we should have a new law - no planes allowed to fly in UK airspace on Sundays - I think this might be the start of a Facebook campaign?!

"In relation to the current eruption, it is worth noting that the last eruption of Eyjafjallajoekull lasted more than 12 months."

The RAF have not been attacking the mud at the Donna Nook range near me. A quiet day. We should make it permanent and stop all this heavier than air flying nonsense.
Iceland is at a spreading ocean plate margin where the magma is chemically basic, which means it has a low viscosity, flows easily and doesn't get stuck and allow high pressure to build up. Consequently, eruptions tend to be gentle but last a long time. Major explosions of the Krakatoa, Vesuvius or even Mt St Helens and Pinatubo type, with their viscous, acid magmas, can't happen. That's why the dust has only risen to aircraft height, from where it will soon wash out n the rain, rather than being injected into the Stratosphere, where it could hang around for month and lead to global dimming and a lack of summer.
I remember when Surtsey, now the southernmost island off Iceland, erupted. The island first surfaced in 1963 and continued erupting till 1967. Almost four years of gentle smoking.
It will be interesting to see how the brittleness of our just in time economy fairs but I don't see a serious effect on agriculture.
