That's the Crescent Lake, a few km south of Dunhuang. It seems this oasis lake has been there for at least a couple of thousand years and the wind blows the sand away, keeping the lake and the pagoda clear. The sand hills are a bit of a tourist attraction as they are used for sand tobogganing.
Dunhuang is to be the site of a 10MW solar photovoltaic power station that will produce 16 million kilowatt hours of electricity each year.
More here. Let's hope they can keep the dust off the PV panels.

Well there isn't an 'Introduce Yourself' forum here.
Hi Bandidoz, I'm surprised you didn't recognise me by my confrontational approach to bullsh!t!
(BTW, forum-wide warning about HL! )
Ah, the INEBG forum. Well there was some very prissy moderating going on and there seemed to be no real debate about peak oil or climate change, just knee jerk "KILL TESCO!" type stuff.
I miss the gardening, household chemicals, foraging, etc discussions there but am getting involved with local people here in Transition Horsham, where we can do all that kind of stuff for real.
I really like the news alerts here that Aurora and others post!
