Sales mind-set
Sitting here, watching the hordes charging into the Boxing Day sales on TV, you just wonder sometimes how these people are going to going to cope when the downturn really happens. With the sales having been going on for weeks it seems, how many of them really needed a bargain and how many were just mindlessly following the herd?
It's hard to imagine the materialistic modern man and woman growing food in their garden and cycling to work.

Have faith - I used to see it like that and then when oil prices went through the roof people went camping, drove less, flew less and generally got on with something else.
Sure there will be plenty of complaining but we adapt more quickly than maybe we sometimes think. People will live without hobby-shopping.

Hobby shopping . . . more like plastic pumpkin shopping!! The same sheep that snap the massivce amount of so-called bargains will then moan about how high the credit card bills are . . .

These could be making a comeback in the shops.

If you're old enough you'll recognise what it is.

Look again I would if was you. There are no hordes from what I've seen. A few choice shots from the media and thats it. Most retailers I know saying its quiet.WolfattheDoor wrote:Sitting here, watching the hordes charging into the Boxing Day sales on TV, you just wonder sometimes how these people are going to going to cope when the downturn really happens. Nowt wrong with the sales though and only a fool would not be taking advantage of them, I've purchased lots of preparation stuff this week and made my coin go lots further - but I know where your coming from, I think the media are spouting that message, but I reckon they've lost 50% of the sheeple, the other half are still spending like total muppets though

I don't know. It's what our parents and grandparents mainly did during the 30's, 40's and 50s. I think you underestimate how adaptable people are when needs must.WolfattheDoor wrote: It's hard to imagine the materialistic modern man and woman growing food in their garden and cycling to work.

Too true and in Wales add 70's and early 80's. If most of the people's parents I know didnt grow some food then we'd have gone very hungry. I very happy today, just walked 2 miles with the dog, have my peak oil head on and looking at how much land is around here to population we have only got one barrier and that is local council policy and their insane council tax, plus most of the homes around our way have good gardens. Plus there has got to be more than 10-15000 people living here, it just feels like the right balance.skeptik wrote:I don't know. Well my in depth survey of the sales shows a decline from last year. I was in that Cornish icon of consumerism Trago Mills yesterday. Last year at around the same time, the car park was pretty full, but yesterday it was pretty empty. Maybe it was because there was only 10% off everything yesterday, but it's 15% today, but it did seem a lot quieter.

Go on Vortex, sock it to us and tell us what it is, before I guess and put my foot in it.Vortex wrote:Well, I'll be darned, it's one of those!skeptik wrote:You'll find out next Boxing Day.WolfattheDoor wrote:Sitting here, watching the hordes charging into the Boxing Day sales on TV, you just wonder sometimes how these people are going to going to cope when the downturnreally happens.

I must admit I was rather surprised to see the top news headline on Boxing Day being about people rushing out to the sales, almost as if our very lives depend on it . . .MisterE wrote:Look again I would if was you. Re: Sales mind-set
I watched the news in the morning and they said the same old thing then showed pictures claiming it was chaos but their was only a handfull of people in the manchester huge shopping mall, then later they showed one shop opening and a few people rushing in and that was it. Normally is insanity, they didnt even have the normal every year shot of people queuing at Howells lol. I dont get why people will sacrifice their holidays, kids, and free time to save a few quid - I personally hate the sales, but I do make good use of the January sale, cheapest time to get your gear for the yearAndy Hunt wrote:I must admit I was rather surprised to see the top news headline on Boxing Day being about people rushing out to the sales, almost as if our very lives depend on it . . .MisterE wrote:Look again I would if was you. Re: Sales mind-set
Muwhahahahahaa Mansion, I got a small card board box on the side of the motorway, lol. Yep I know what you mean, we worked away for 6 months once living in vans you soon realise you dont need lots of stuff - mind you I tend to get only stuff for the future now like wool jumpers, good socks, boots, fishing gear (like my fishing) books. C'mon I got Organic Gardening £4, Ray Mears Wild UK Food £4 and Self-Sufficiency £3 from "the book people" with free delievery for just £11! It would be a crime not to get them, especially as I was after two of them that would set me back £40+ even your van got space for a bit of Ray I knowJohnB wrote:It's ok for you lot who live in massive mansionsMisterE wrote:I personally hate the sales, but I do make good use of the January sale, cheapest time to get your gear for the year. My visit to the sales was just to buy a few things I need right now. No space to store anything that I might need later. Living in a van is a great way to lose your obsession with acquiring stuff
