Yeah, I'm still not tired of the first 7 or 8 Queen albums - and I've been listening to them on and off for over 25 years!

So if the SHTF and I only had space to take one CD with me before scarpering to the hills, well, er, it might be a Queen album! (then again, knowing my luck I'd probably grab one of the kids' CDs by accident and be doomed to listen to "The Tweenies Favourite Xmas Songs" or something for the rest of my days...)

I'd take Queen II - used to get high on that when I was a teenager!

Warm Leatherette - and a lovely twisted version of it on YouTube:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=zo7ONZlN5Zg
See the breaking glass
In the underpass
See the breaking glass
In the underpass

Warm leatherette

Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel
Hear the crushing steel
Feel the steering wheel

Warm leatherette

Warm leatherette

Warm leatherette
Melts on your burning flesh
You can see your reflection
In the luminescent dash

Warm leatherette

A tear of petrol
Is in your eye
The hand brake
Penetrates your thigh
Quick -- Let's make love
Before you die

On warm leatherette
Warm leatherette

Warm leatherette
Warm leatherette

A nice little Post Peak number often performed by Christy Moore:

Peace In The Valley Once Again

When they close down the last shopping Mall
Crickets will sing through crumbling walls
Termites will eat through the doors
As rabbits hop round the shop floors
Empty shelves will swarm with bees
Cash machines will sprout weeds
Lizards will crawl across the parking lot
As birds fly around empty shops

There will be peace in the valley once again

Wild flowers will grow up the mannequins
Painting them with a leafy skin
Their plastic eyes will fall to the floor
To be gathered by wild boar
Mirrors will crack in half
As wild horses gallop past
Wild doves will build their nests
On the escalator steps

There will be peace in the valley once again

Dad's Gonna Kill Me (Dad=Slang for Baghdad)

Out in the desert there?s a soldier lying dead
Vultures pecking the eyes out of his head
Another day that could have been me there instead
Nobody loves me here
Nobody loves me here

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me
Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

You hit the booby trap and you?re in pieces
With every bullet your risk increases
Old Ali Baba, he?s a different species
Nobody loves me here
Nobody loves me here

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me
Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

I?m dead meat in my HumV Frankenstein
I hit the road block, God knows I never hit the mine
The dice rolled and I got lucky this time

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me
Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

I?ve got a wife, a kid, another on the way
I might get home if I can live through today
Before I came out here I never used to pray
Nobody loves me here
Nobody loves me here

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

Dad?s in a bad mood, Dad?s got the blues
It?s someone else?s mess that I didn?t choose
At least we?re winning on the Fox Evening News
Nobody loves me here

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me
Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

Dawn Patrol went out and didn?t come back
Hug the wire and pray like I told you, Mac
Or they?ll be shovelling bits of you into a sack

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me.

And who?s that stranger walking in my dreams
And whose that stranger cast a shadow ?cross my heart
And who?s that stranger, I dare speak his name
Must be old Death a-walking
Must be old Death a-walking

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

7 muzzle monkeys standing in a row
Standing waiting for The Sandbox to blow
Sitting targets in the wild west show

Nobody loves me here

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

Another angel got his wings this week
Charbroiled with his own Willie Pete
Nobody?s dying if you speak double-speak

Dad?s Gonna Kill Me

Anyone familiar with the American folk singer Malvina Reynolds? She's a recent discovery for me anyway!

There are so many songs and poems of hers that would be appropriate to post here, looks like she was quite a prolific writer. If anyone's interested I recommend having a look at some of her work here.

She's most famous for the song "Little Boxes", but here are a some other gems:
World in their Pocket (1974)

They've got the world in their pocket, pocket, pocket, pocket,
They've got the world in their pocket,
And they're up there in control.
They've got the world in their pocket,
They can shake it, they can rock it,
They can kick it for a goal.
They've got the world in their pocket,
But their pocket's got a hole.

There's inflation and pollution,
Everything's been bought on credit
In this rotten institution,
And they waste the gentle people
Cause the system has no soul,
They've got the world in their pocket,
But their pocket's got a hole.

Unemployment is their glory,
If a million children starve
Why that's an old familiar story,
And there's rage and there's rebellion,
And there's grief from pole to pole.
They've got the world in their pocket,
But their pocket's got a hole.

(Chorus)

Takes a war to keep them perking,
And they have to bleed the world
To keep their bloody system working,
But the system's self-destructing
While they play that gangster role,
They've got the world in their pocket,
But their pocket's got a hole.

They've got the world in their pocket, pocket, pocket, pocket,
They've got the world in their pocket,
And they're up there in control.
They've got the world in their pocket,
But their pocket's got a hole.
God bless the Grass (1964)

God bless the grass that grows thru the crack.
They roll the concrete over it to try and keep it back.
The concrete gets tired of what it has to do,
It breaks and it buckles and the grass grows thru,
And God bless the grass.

God bless the truth that fights toward the sun,
They roll the lies over it and think that it is done.
It moves through the ground and reaches for the air,
And after a while it is growing everywhere,
And God bless the grass.

God bless the grass that grows through cement.
It's green and it's tender and it's easily bent.
But after a while it lifts up its head,
For the grass is living and the stone is dead,
And God bless the grass.

God bless the grass that's gentle and low,
Its roots they are deep and its will is to grow.
And God bless the truth, the friend of the poor,
And the wild grass growing at the poor man's door,
And God bless the grass.
World Gone Beautiful (1969)

The world's gone beautiful because it's about to die.
I never saw such flower faces or so intent a sky.
I never heard such lines from horns or violins,
Or saw such lavish girls, such dandy boys,
And I know why.
It's that the world is asking not to die.

I never saw such hands flexing like silver leaves,
I never knew such air, or leaned to so good a breeze.
Even the tears I cry, they aren't salt but clear,
For sea birds riding the wind calling their last,
Their wild goodbye.
The world is asking not to die.

I want to hold this world and never let it go,
I want the sun to always rise on the kids next door.
Whether I go or stay, that question still abides,
Posed by rainbows in the river spray.
What answer do you give
A world that asks so bitterly to live?

We Will All Go Together When We Go - by Tom Lehrer

When you attend a funeral,
It is sad to think that sooner or
Later those you love will do the same for you.
And you may have thought it tragic,
Not to mention other adjec-
Tives, to think of all the weeping they will do.
But don't you worry.
No more ashes, no more sackcloth.
And an armband made of black cloth
Will some day never more adorn a sleeve.
For if the bomb that drops on you
Gets your friends and neighbors too,
There'll be nobody left behind to grieve.

And we will all go together when we go.
What a comforting fact that is to know.
Universal bereavement,
An inspiring achievement,
Yes, we all will go together when we go.

We will all go together when we go.
All suffuse with an incandescent glow.
No one will have the endurance
To collect on his insurance,
Lloyd's of London will be loaded when they go.

Oh we will all fry together when we fry.
We'll be french fried potatoes by and by.
There will be no more misery
When the world is our rotisserie,
Yes, we will all fry together when we fry.

Down by the old maelstrom,
There'll be a storm before the calm.

And we will all bake together when we bake.
There'll be nobody present at the wake.
With complete participation
In that grand incineration,
Nearly three billion hunks of well-done steak.

Oh we will all char together when we char.
And let there be no moaning of the bar.
Just sing out a Te Deum
When you see that I.C.B.M.,
And the party will be "come as you are."

Oh we will all burn together when we burn.
There'll be no need to stand and wait your turn.
When it's time for the fallout
And Saint Peter calls us all out,
We'll just drop our agendas and adjourn.

You will all go directly to your respective Valhallas.
Go directly, do not pass Go, do not collect two hundred dolla's.

And we will all go together when we go.
Ev'ry Hottenhot and ev'ry Eskimo.
When the air becomes uranious,
And we will all go simultaneous.
Yes we all will go together
When we all go together,
Yes we all will go together when we go.

Headed For Disaster by Steve Dore

I?m tied to the tracks, and something?s coming I see,
It?s the train of inflation, bearing down on me,
Much less money, at the end of each day,
And I?m not making more, in my hourly pay
Look out ahead, there at Frankenstien tressle,
Those old paper beams, won?t hold this vessel,
Full speed ahead, into the writing on the wall,
The U.S. Humpty Dumpty?s gonna a great fall

Headed for disaster, faster and faster...

The politics gaining up in power these days,
Preaches, loud and clear, ?The Lord, must be obeyed?,
Church, the beast, can devour the state,
Divine hands sealing, our Democracy?s fate
The question then becomes, so abundantly clear,
How do we save, our own rights from here,
Live free or die, to the very last stand,
Our constitution is the, supreme law of this land

Headed for disaster, faster and faster...

Government is liable, and out of control,
For millions and billions, and trillions and more,
The rich get richer, and the rest don?t know,
Their standard of living?s gonna fall through the floor,
Better to be ready by making a plan,
Than trusting what your told, with your head in the sand,
Grow your own food, get ready, get some gold,
Build up your bunker, ?fore you get too old

On the second day of peaking
a Doomer said to me:

And a hide out in the tall trees.?

On the tenth day of peaking
a Doomer said to me:
?Have ten chickens laying,
Nine tools for farming,
Eight seeds for saving,
Seven fields for planting,
Six jugs of vodka,
Gold coins for trade !
Four loaded guns,
Three food stores,
Two water sources,
And a hide out in the tall trees.?

On the eleventh day of peaking
a Doomer said to me:
?Have eleven trees a-fruiting,
Ten chickens laying,
Nine tools for farming,
Eight seeds for saving,
Seven fields for planting,
Six jugs of vodka,
Gold coins for trade !
Four loaded guns,
Three food stores,
Two water sources,
And a hide out in the tall trees.?

On the twelfth day of peaking
a Doomer said to me:
You?ll need twelve neighbors helping,
Eleven trees a-fruiting,
Ten chickens laying,

GOOD GOD you lot are my kind of people! Been meaning to read this thread for a while. I love all of those tracks. It made me think of past singers that were great and had a dig at the system and were above the system in many ways. I ask myself now where is this generations Neil Young, Frank Zappa etc

May fav song that is not really a PO song but one that so hits the nail on the head for its subject and has to be the all time SHEEPLE anthem is;

RATM Bullet in the Head!

This time the bullet cold rocked ya
A yellow ribbon instead of a swastika
Nothin' proper about ya propaganda
Fools follow the rules when the set commands ya
They said it was blue
When the blood was red
That's is how you got a bullet blasted through your head

Blasted through your head
Blasted through your head

I give a shout out to the living dead
Who stood and watched at the feds cold centralized
So serene on the screen
You was mesmerized
Cellular phones soundin' a death tone
Corporations cold
Turn ya to stone before you realize

They load the clip in omnicolor
They pack the 9, they fire it at prime time
Sleeping gas, every home was like Alcatraz
And mutha fuckas lost their minds

Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high

They load the clip in omnicolor
They pack the 9, they fire it at prime time
Sleeping gas, every home was like Alcatraz
And mutha fuckas lost their minds

No escape from the mass mind rape
Play it again jack and then rewind the tape
Play it again and again and again
Until ya mind is locked in
Believin' all the lies that they are tellin' ya
Buying all the products that they are selling ya
They say jump
Ya say how high
Ya brain dead
Ya gotta fuckin' bullet in your head

Just victims of the in-house drive-by
They say jump, you say how high

Ya standin' in line
Believin' the lies
Ya bowin' down to the flag
Ya got a fuckin' bullet in ya head

Just to add a yellow ribbon is used, in the United States, to signify support for its troops in foreign wars. A yellow ribbon was most recently used to show support of US troops in the Gulf War, the focus of the song. Along with that the sheeple being metaphorically shot in the head by TV ie like a war for your mind, to get you to become a working slave whose reward is feeling good when you buy something that the corporations push, you've become a zombie feeding on corporate adverts and government lies. This song has so many great elements and interpetations but the bottom line is I think messages from all kinds of media are metaphorically shot into the minds of passive, unsuspecting viewers and listeners under now we are under control. God this song is more true today than when it was written.

When your depressed about PO this song always cheers me up :-)

NEIL YOUNG

"Don't Let It Bring You Down"

Old man lying
by the side of the road
With the lorries rolling by,
Blue moon sinking
from the weight of the load
And the building scrape the sky,
Cold wind ripping
down the allay at dawn
And the morning paper flies,
Dead man lying
by the side of the road
With the daylight in his eyes.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Blind man running
through the light
of the night
With an answer in his hand,
Come on down
to the river of sight
And you can really understand,
Red lights flashing
through the window
in the rain,
Can you hear the sirens moan?
White cane lying
in a gutter in the lane,
If you're walking home alone.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Just find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Don't let it bring you down
It's only castles burning,
Just find someone who's turning
And you will come around.

Hehe nice track Mr E . . . I once heard a live version, and Neil Young introduced it by saying,

"Here's a song that's guaranteed to bring you right down. It's called, 'Don't Let It Bring You Down'"
