They are stockpiling for practice, not to use during random street violence, and Obama isn't really going to get the guns. I suspect it is just an excuse to drive up prices for awhile on some guns or another to help out campaign contributors. Can't ever discount money in American politics.

I would have thought the background checks for everyone would be more of an issue than the actual types of guns he wants to pretend to try and restrict. I sold a few pistols this past summer, that will become a real pain in the butt t do in the future if I have to take people to a firearms dealer and the sale depends on them being a reputable citizen.

No I dont think it will lead to a civil war.
Obama is talking about slight restrictions on the ownership of guns.
It is likely that any actual changes in the law will be long delayed and minimal when and if they do take effect.

Following the recent mass shooting there is some public support for tighter gun controls, but in a few months the shootings will be yesterdays news, but the gun lobby will still be as powerful as ever.

and the gun lobby will be as powerful as ever because Americans really like their guns. Crazy people included, which is the real problem.

I like the NRAs basic stance on this though.

If we are going to ban guns then you first Mr Obama.

The NRA is great. It is pathetic we even need them in America, but liberals really only like the parts of the Constitution related to eating tofu, stripping everyone else of rights they reserve for themselves (armed guards for only the rich kids, let the others get killed!), and the idea that no one actually creates anything in this country anymore. Some day THE BIG ONE will solve a reasonable amount of that problem I suppose.

I don't see a civil war happening, but you do hear about certain nutjobs who don't seem to understand the issue.
