Good morning and hello there to you too. We always welcome new members.

Not spambots though.

Probably, but I prefer to give them the benifit of the doubt until an advert appears, or a link to a dodgy website.
Then I delete them.

Welcome Terra. Sorry about the reception but we get too many spammers and are a bit too suspicious at times.

Look here troll, prove it. Actually contribute with some posts of substance, then i might believe you when you say you are genuine.

I do not understand the logic behind creating spambots.

I find it difficult to get my head a round why folk sit at their PCs night after night spamming forums. Who are they? Is there an accepted demographic of the spammer? I think it's all bored students, people with a certain degree of intelligence but who are far too lazy to apply it constructively? When will peak spamming be reached?

Advertising normally, or less commonly the spreading of political or religous views.

Most spambot postings are harmless initialy though not contributing anything useful. Typical examples include "usefull information, thanks for sharing" or " Very interesting thanks"

After a while, advertising links appear in the signature line or the post.
Often for cellphones, ipads, sports shoes, online sex sites, designer clothing, estate agents, and so on.

I normally then delete the posts and the poster.
If sensible replies have been made, then I might leave the post, minus the advert.

I have my doubts about many new members, but dont delete them until certain.

Monbiot has a couple of good articles about forum spamming, here and here.

And here's something very similar.
