Isn't a dishwasher's more trouble than it's worth if there's only one (or two) of you? Mind you perhaps I'm biassed: we never seem to have owned one that's worked properly.

Mine recently broke down, the first time since I bought it about four years ago. And the only reason it broke was that the outlet pipe was completely frozen up and it knackered the pressure switch and pump.

I think if there hadn't been two of us when I bought it, I may not have. But I have it now, and I think it would be a waste to skip it rather than repairing it.

Another thing about living simply is having less stuff. I have enough cooking and eating gear to keep me going for one day, (or occasionally two if I eat junk food ), and it's almost enough for the number of visitors I can fit in my home. I've got 2 mugs, 2 tumblers, 2 wine glasses, 2 dinner plates, 2 forks.............. So I haven't got enough stuff to make up a full dishwasher load!

If you want to simplify your life, go travelling for a couple of years :D.

IIRC Marmite was meant to be a vegetarian stock substitute, not something to spread on toast. QED.

Its quite easy for a couple to fill a dishwasher.
Theres the obvious cutlerly and crockery, but theres also the frying pan and sauce pan, the dog bowls, the chopping board ect.
We run ours 4 or 5 times a week usualy.

I really miss not having a dishwasher but I've never owned a toaster or a coffee machine. Maybe I'd miss those too if I'd had them.

We've hardly any gadgets and we've even got rid of the gas cooker for this winter so we're doing everything on the wood stove or on the fire when it's lit.

Vecon is nicer imo. A concentrated stock, yes, but also lovely spread extremely thinly on toast.

We make toast on the hob of our Rayburn - using the teflon bags you can get for making toasted sandwiches in a normal toaster which stops any problems with crumbs. It tastes better than 'electric' toast too.

We just open the front and toast the bread with a big fork.

What are those teflon things...

(I don't usually have as much free time as this during the day but I've got a stinking cold and a lamb in the kitchen to "look after" and I am not going out !)

I just slapped my bread on the top of the woodburner and kept turning it.

I burned the last bit slightly as it didn't pop up when it was done!

We have Vecon for cooking, and Marmite for spreading on toast. Marvellous other 1/2, though from overseas, loves marmite and eats it with breakfast most mornings. I therefore declared him an Honourary Brit. Ken are you sure you're not one o'they Asylum Seekers you're sometimes on about  ?
