It's not outright anti-Semitic, no, but "what a stupid time for New Year" makes me a leetle uncomfortable, especially when I read it just after reading another thread which contains a line about Jewish people being really bad with water conservation.

You all realise that this website is actually visible to Jewish people, right?

Congratulations on the job, Ludwig. Just so you know (nobody warned us before we moved from Cambridge), things are really expensive here. It might not be so bad for you in Cork or Galway - James' job is in Dublin & so we're in Kildare, which is more expensive - but it's still cheaper for us to d...

The poll so far shows no believers in Judaism or Islam which is a little surprising, considering the general % in the population. I'm Jewish but I voted pagan; I identify very, very strongly as Jewish in a cultural sense but don't have much truck with the religious side of it, and lean much more to...

I'd take the 2 extra kids and throw the fat bloke over. He can float Charming. Does it ever occur to you that OMG FATTIES READ POWERSWITCH TOO? Or does it not matter, because fat people don't have feelings, or something? So the 2 kids have no feelings  ? Nobody was randomly bringing previo...

Maybe you're right Shira. One thing you've made me think about though, is that life is going to get a lot rougher for many people. I suspect that the level of civilised discourse and what's appropriate and what's not is going to rapidly devolve back to "I'm stronger than you and I make the rul...

I get that humour would be necessary - it's how I have got through and continue to get through some pretty awful stuff on a daily basis. I just don't think jokes which amount to "hur hur, fatties" are funny, and making jokes about skinny people doesn't make it any better, for various reaso...

Thanks, Adam - my younger brother's getting married this year, and no doubt there'll be a sprog on the way soon and that's one I definitely won't be able to avoid, so maybe I'll enjoy being an aunt more than I expect.

Thanks, Keela. Your friend is absolutely right - the attitude towards involuntarily childless people is often appalling - it frequently goes beyond callous and insensitive right into hostile, so when someone responds with kindness it's a pleasant change. Thankfully, my marriage has grown even strong...

I'm 29, my husband is 40, and we've got no children, which has been a constant source of grief to me for many years; I started trying for a child when I was 20 because I knew I'd have trouble, I've had eight miscarriages, and am finding it extremely difficult to cope with all my friends and family h...

Because a lot of police officers are attracted to the idea of having power, and an unfortunate number of them are too willing to exploit and abuse that power. Sometimes it gets taken too far.

Well sort of. We'll still see all the replies to his posts, including quotes from him, and that will totally confuse any topics he's got his teeth into :? Argh yes, forgot about that bit, buggrit. If we ever upgrade to the newer versions of phpBB there's a neat 'ignore' function... jmb says "it's on the list of things to do" but it won't happen any time soon as we're moving house on Jan 5th and who knows when we'll get a reliable internet connection sorted, it took seven weeks last...

emordnilap: we're looking at Wicklow or Kildare, as James' new job is in Dun Laoghaire. We're going to start off by seeing how likely it is that we could find something suitable in Blessington or thereabouts, as I've asked around and heard good things about it. I've noticed (mostly from spending a l...
