Queen rearing from a stock that are stingers may not get you back docile bees because you are using the same genetics. The trick to that problem is to requeen with a mated queen of known provenance and providing your introduction is successful within a few weeks all your bees will be replaced with h...

The reason I mentioned an external feeder was because you do not have other nearby hives which may induce 'robbing' and you wont have to disturb the hive to feed them. Also use an entrance reducer especially if you see wasps taking an interest! This becomes more of a threat the later the season prog...

Yes they will have started building comb. I thought you had used top bars to transfer bars and bees to a hive, never mind. Doubtful if queen has come into lay again so soon after conditioning herself for swarming (that's assuming its a prime swarm with old queen). If its a secondary swarm (smaller) ...

I have been beekeeping and collecting swarms etc since the mid 80's, I'm not claiming to be an expert but I can tell you it seems from what you have said all will be well with your first swarm collection. The remaining bees would eventually move back to their old hive position. At the moment they ar...

As long as you got the queen with your first lot you should be fine! Don't fret about it. By all means try to collect as many stragglers as you can but the ones that you don't get should return to their original hive so all should be good.

That's an interesting photo, obviously all laid at the same time as its a complete slab of brood yet each of the cells adjacent to a wire has had the brood removed. What does that say?

Mitsubishi Outlander Plug in Hybrid

I got an unsolicited snail mailing today from Mitsubishi telling me about their new plug in hybrid becoming available in August together with a web link. I looked it up and was getting quite interested until I saw the price tag. Over £42k! WTF! Seems to me this tech will have to get a hell of a lot ...

We recently had 3 cu m of fully seasoned 35cm length split logs delivered in those huge sacks (which are later returned). I could have had the length cut longer or shorter to suit my burner for exactly the same price. Total Cost for the 3 cu m in Swedish Krona was 1400 which equates to 47.77 pounds ...

Thanks to the generosity of a forum member I am now growing Tzar runner beans. He kindly sent me some of his stored seeds but mentioned something about their viability. With that in mind I divided them up into 3 batches. The first batch is being 'chitted' between two sheets of wetted kitchen tissue ...
