Re: Mobile off-grid living – urban guide

Of course the modern wet razors are full of oil based plastics, but it's not necessary, and I can't imagine that someone couldn't come up with a decent blade that can be resharpened. I use a (new bought) all-metal safety razor. Beautiful and heavy with adjustable tension and the best option for tho...

I dont visit LATOC anymore. I am interested though, does anyone on there acknowledge that maybe some of their predictions were a little hasty? Umm...they've got RGR but I don't think that counts! :) I beg to differ, neither Latoc or peakoil.com could deal with RGR. He only seems to be welcome here ...

You're still making the mistake of characterising them in simple terms, it's a very broad church but with it's fair share of loons. And racists get very short shrift there and are soon ejected. So do people of color who aren't the right religion. Its hardly equal opportunity ejection. You have (of ...

Damn - IPlayer TV only available in the UK :-) I'll have to put my tech-head on and try and work out a way around that (ironic really - the amount of technology I'm using to try and view a programme on Victorian Life) have the same problem here. I'd go with not so large a house as well, unless you have a HUGE family. 1000-1200 sq ft (I guess about 110-120sq metres) should be plenty. If you need room for storage of "things/stuff" build outbuildings. If it needs to be stored, 9 times out of 10 you don't need it. Get a wood/multi fue...

Not good for customer choice if other shops go out of business. Consumer choic is the reason they go out of business. When people have the choice of Tesco and X, they choose Tesco. Not good for the owners and employees trying to make a living in smaller shops. Tractors were bad for ox teams Cheap e...

DominicJ wrote:As I said, I have supermarkets no further away than the hairdressers and estate agents that used to be butchers and bakers.
But isn't that the point? If the supermarket(s) weren't there you would still have local Butchers and Bakers, rather than Hairdressers and estate agents.

Re: Forget electric ferncing on remote land.

I was in the local farm suppliers yesterday asking if they had any security cages etc to help prevent electric fence energisers being nicked. Recently we had our shipping container broken into. There was a beefy mechanism holding the locking rods in place. They must have used a circular saw on the ...

We have a winter duvet and 2 dogs. Keep plenty warm at night in Nova Scotia, where the winter cold has been down to -30.

We also only keep the thermostat set to 17 degrees, but don't expect to walk around in the house in T-shirts during the winter time.

Hey Andy,

I've got the exact same thing. I agree it works fine, just a little bit slow. I'll give mine a bit more of a workout this winter and get a better idea.

Tried renting a petrol splitter, but we killed it after 1 day  Got our money back though.

Getting back to the point. :) http://www.wunderground.com/blog/JeffMasters/comment.html?entrynum=1081&tstamp=200809 Ike looks like being a major damaging storm on the refining infrastructure in Texas. Looking at 27 foot storm surges in Houston and Galveston. Already talk of rationing of petrol i...

That flue in the UK would be a LOT more expensive ... we are required to use some sort of fancy double insulated construction. That is double walled insulated chimney pipe. Maybe it's supply and demand. Lots of wood stoves installed here, and more seemingly every day, I know the local wood stove in...

A Chimney pipe can be installed through the outside wall and up to the roof line ( at least that is the case in Canada, not sure what the UK building codes are. Jerry Yes but at about £300 per metre which gives a flue cost of £1500 to £2400 for materials only for most houses. quote] I think you mig...

Good point about the glut on installing wood burners. I work in a B&Q type store, and the guy responsible for wood stoves has been selling and installing them since April. He's starting to worry whether he'll have enough chimney pipe to complete all the installs  You don't need a chimney ...
