Re: New Zealand's most fertile land dug up for housing

Another case of economics trumping the environment. I thought New Zealanders were a bit more enlightened than that though. Obviously not! One of these days economists and politicians will learn that we can't eat and breath money and that they should be putting eating and breathing over making money.

Re: "Two dead in attack on oil tanker"

The BBC was reporting last night that it was a drone attack. That would point to a political motive rather than a monetary, piracy, one.

Perhaps it's the speed of the rise and the meteorite rather than the direction?

Re: Ex cop asked to spy on XR

Then there is increased erosion. Even a 100mm sea level rise is going to increase coastal erosion and with increased storm surges and wave power due to increased wind speeds due to global warming/heating that erosion will be significant.

Re: Time article about the meteoric rise of /r/collapse

About work/life balance in the near future, if you don't work you won't live. That was the case in the past even if working was hunter gathering. The concept of work/leisure, which is what I think you are talking about, will be very much curtailed.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

If a big company can persuade the government that they should be able to employ cheap foreign labour rather than pay a UK based person what is needed to attract the numbers that they require they will go for the cheap option.

The current publicity is probably part of that campaign.

Re: New tidal turbine, Orkney

There have been a couple of fixed working machines in the entrance to Strangford Loch in Northern Ireland for a few years now so the concept is hardly new although the floating bit might be. This would enable their deployment in deeper waters the same way as wind turbines are going.

Re: Ex cop asked to spy on XR

All the IPCC reports have ended up as underestimates by the time the next one comes out, sometimes even as the report comes out, and all the recent reports on ice sheet collapse have been much more pessimistic so I would plan for Hanson's warning of 7 metres sea level rise and hope for the IPCC leve...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Most of the problem with lorry drivers is paying them a very low wage for a job which can entail unsociable hours and long periods away from home. If you want people to do that you will have to pay them well now that you can't get cheap labour from abroad.

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Apparently there is a shortage of UK lorry drivers because the big companies paid drivers peanuts and relied on drivers from low cost economies in Europe to make up the numbers as UK drivers were priced out of a job. Now, because of covid mainly, the EU drivers have gone home and the big companies a...

Re: Planned Somerset nuclear plant on hold ? or not ?

I saw a recent newspaper article which said that there was a great reluctance across the world to buy Chinese military aircraft through a lack of trust in China and its motives. I'm surprised that Africa accepts as much Chinese "Aid" as it does but then the corrupt politicians taking the b...

Re: Bill McGuire open letter to climate scientists

What a great letter. It has been obvious to anyone who has been reading scientific papers from the date of the first IPCC report that things are a lot worse than the IPCC is telling us. The day after an IPCC report came out new science would tell us that things were worse than we had just been told....

Re: Major hospital looses power due to flooding.

When we fitted our cellar out all the electrical infrastructure was fitted at 1200 above floor level to give us time to start pumping away any water which might get in. We have freezers siting on the floor but they can be unplugged so that the rest of the house supply isn't compromised and the cella...
