Re: Solar power from Australia to Singapore.

I saw an article, in the Guardian i think, about how large scale solar farms in desert areas could change climate over large areas due to the difference in temperatures and humidity caused by the difference in absorption and radiation between solar panels and desert sand. It's all a matter of degree...

Samsung Heavy partners with the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute to develop nuclear-powered ships

The fact that Samsung Heavy and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute are developing nuclear-powered ships has me very worried indeed especially as, on average, one large ship a year just disappears and another one hundred are lost or founder (sink to you and I). Unless there are very stringent...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

........... An interesting incident where infected people drove about 2000km across Australia stopping at five towns. Infections unknown as yet. My first reaction to that is aren't those people stupid. In reality many of that sort of people are not at all stupid. They are however very selfish and o...

Re: Preparing for extreme heatwaves.

Many people in the UK cannot see the logic of keeping the windows closed and shaded on a hot day and opening them at night, unfortunately. I have seen many a person sitting in a fan oven breeze by an open window insisting that they "like a bit of fresh air on a hot day!" And they look at y...

Still only about half the all time high of about $140 reached some years ago.
How about the price allowing for inflation. I bet that it's not far off the $140 on that basis.

.......................I do not see lockdown ending on June 21st. .............. Pundits are saying that the government might allow the lockdown to be extended but not later than the start of the school holidays so that we can all take a staycation and the home hospitality industry can enjoy that a...

Re: edf-decides-move-dungeness-b-defuelling-phase

They build the beach up with pebbles from near the shore line from what I have seen on film. The natural build up will only be near sea level until a storm comes in to pile the pebbles up a bit more so most of the build up will be horizontally outwards to extend the spit. Sea level rising will come ...

Re: edf-decides-move-dungeness-b-defuelling-phase

Dungeness is probably the most vulnerable of all our nuclear reactors to sea level rise, it's already having the beach in front of it replenished every year, so it's a good job that it is being defueled. Hopefully it can be fully decommissioned before sea level rises too much and makes it an island.

Re: Propane shortage ?

We must have a a dozen empty propane cylinders which have been left as our retailer has changed their supplier over the years. They are quite happy to give us new cylinders but won't take the old ones back as they're from their the old supplier. Flogas used to be the cheapest locally but now Calor i...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

I think that we should continue to name the variant after the country where it was discovered as that gives us an excuse to ban travel to and from that country, or at least enforce a supervised quarantine, until the danger of the new variant is known. This isn't the same as something like syphilis w...

Re: CCS for waste wood gasification plant

I think that there might start to be problems if the proportion of oxygen in the atmosphere drops below 16%, I think it is, as at the percentage things won't burn in the atmosphere. We can still breath OK at that percentage but we're safe from fires if a little cold during the winter.

Re: CCS for waste wood gasification plant

CCS is not about changing the chemistry of CO2 it's about compressing and potentially liquifying it so that it can be stored in former oil bearing strata deep underground at high pressure. The energy required to do that might not be the same as that required to chemically alter it but it is signific...
