Re: New coronavirus in/from China

LJ complains about anecdotes and appeals to emotion, then immediately posts a massive polemic from Spiked which is, yes, anecdotes and appeals to emotion.

Re: Brexit process

Will not happen. No UK government is going to grant a second referendum, and even if they did then the SNP would lose it. Why? Because of fisheries. They would now have to advocate going back into the CFP as a tiny nation, and lose all their fish stocks again. EDIT: Also, there's the Scottish Borde...

Re: Brexit process

Ok, so, from the rumors and bits and pieces leaking out: Of course he has had to do all these things in order to get a deal, as we liberal lefties always knew he would. Tory Brexiteers will say this is a massive win for BJ and a justification of his nodeal-bluff to get a deal on the best terms poss...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

utterly incapable of or unwilling to engage in independent thought. You're presumably aware that we're all doing the same thing - getting our ideas and evidence from someone else? The difference is who we think are worth listening to, and why. But none of us are doing our own research beyond regurg...

It's showing cumulative production, not current.

Re: Brexit process

I've heard that most of what we fish we sell to the EU rather than eat ourselves, so having the waters to ourselves may not be that great if a local market can't be found. Meanwhile the no-deal impact on the rest of the economy rather outweighs the benefits from fishing. I'm not convinced that banni...

Has the feature where you get an email when someone replies to a thread you've contributed to gone away? I don't seem to get any notification emails since the upgrade.

Re: Brexit process

But it wasn't the UK government that sold these things. It was a transaction between two private companies. The real problem here is that the lawyers who drew up the contracts never considered what would happen if a country left the EU. That isn't the UK's fault. Is that any different to the govt p...

Re: Brexit process

You don't understand! The government does not have to buy back any quotas. We have left the EU . Regaining control of those fisheries was part of what we got by default when we left the EU. It was part of the calculation. They are ours to bargain with, not the EU's. That is what this argument is ab...

Re: New coronavirus in/from China

Has anyone who posts here had it yet? Not knowingly, but several people close to me or that I work with have had it. My nephew has it currently and my brother's family is all isolating as a result. No one I know has had seriously symptoms - most of them have been asymptomatic and only know they had...

Re: Forum style

If you're gonna do, do it fast, before we all get used to the new style and start grumbling about 'too much change' when it goes back. I actually quite like the new style - especially the quoting style - but I would probably like most of them.
