Initially probably best to cover all bases, matches, lighters cheap gas, a few zippos and flints, lighter fluid and some fire starter things (the ones you scrape steel against and get a pile of sparks). But Post crash while we will rely on open flames more because of that it will be less of an issue...

Strange how oil at $100+ has become the new norm, does not merit a mention in MSM. A deathly hush from those who dismissed it as an aberation, wild speculation etc etc. I'm lazy, anyone know how long it has averaged $100+ must be over a year by now. Equally on the peak oil side $100+ has not perhaps...

The reason I think meat gets its bad rep is the way it is reared, intensively. The US has significant numbers of corn fed cattle, feedlots are personally speaking an abomination not only is it wasteful of corn but not in my opinion good for the cattle on a welfare level. Biff is right there are larg...

It has got silly already - what can Europe and the US actually do? From my understanding there are large parts of the Ukraine that actually do want to be allied to Russia. Keep out and let it settle down there is nothing we or the US can do.

liquid feed?

Putting seaweed on the garden today but filled a 205ltr drum to the top my intention is to use it for a liquid feed. I have access to poultry, cow and sheep manure too should I add some also as it rots down? Should I fill it with water now or wait til it rots further? As I have not tried this any re...

Beans (broad & runner), peas, parsnip, kale etc OK. Leek, carrot no luck but I'll keep trying. It would be a very good skill to master as things get 'tighter'. potatoes are not as easy as you would think, keeping clean tubers year to year to year is a challenge. Having tried I would advise start...

Ideally I would like to save seed year to year but its harder than it sounds with the vagaries of weather etc. Problem is when it works you have more than you can use before it goes 'off' just wish we had a seed saving network locally.

The living wage A large part of the problem as I see it is where wages fall to the level people cannot afford the basics the state has to top up through income support etc. But this is in effect a handout to business I came across a figure on another site which cited a large Walmart store where the ...

Is this 'it'?

Ukraine - East v West, EU gas supplies, financial markets near all time high while most workers have seen falling standards of living across the globe. Multiple tensions across middle East none of the arab spring countries have settled down and all still in turmoil. There must be a limit to the aid ...

pepperman, Yes April is late but up here all the dates in books etc are early, I estimate we are a full 4 weeks after down south. This is made up for I think by our longer days in summer resulting in faster growth. Planting in winter is pretty standard but here you're just putting it in cold wet gro...

Any idea what variety Aldi have? They are nowhere near where I am but I could get a family member to get a pile and heel them in for a few weeks. if suitable I could get more trees and this would offset the enevitable losses we get here. Thanks for the links emordnilap I shall have a look this weeke...
