Hi all, A few years ago I cooked a fry up on top of Kinder Scout in the snow when the temperature was -5C using 'buddy burners' made from leftover fat from the local kebab house (after I'd used all the liquid stuff to run my car.). I've also made them with leftover candles. These are great because y...

A 13amp plug in timer would work in a lot of cases, although some dryers the start button must be pressed when the machine is on. Older ones tend to have proper buttons that would work well with the plug in timer. Apparently you can get heat pump tumbler dryers which are most efficient, but probably...

I was vaguley interested in the green deal, but when I made some enquiries all I could find were firms that were interested in selling me a survey and not many that were interested in actually providing the product. I'm not paying out a couple of hundred quid for someone to tell me that it makes sen...

I have a tumble dryer, but since it's belt broke about a year ago, I haven't got around to fixing it so we have saved quite a lot of money! We air dry all our clothes, and it is an effort as I have four kids so there can be at least 1 wash load a night. In the summer it all goes on the whirlygig, an...

Thank you all for your advice...You were absolutely right! I convinced a couple of friends to join me yesterday in the glorious sunshine, and with plentiful wine breaks we have cleared the whole allotment. Managed to fill a builders bag, four rubble sacks and 10 large binliners with weeds! Some of t...

New Allotment
After nearly 6 years on the town council waiting list I have had the pleasant surprise of being allocated an allotmen today and it's not too far from my house so will be able to visit it easily. I used to be quite enthusiastic about growing things, although I will admit my skills need a lot of impro...

Completely agree about the inset lights. Although I have a fair bit of insulation in the loft there's a huge gap above each light and I can feel a huge draught around them. I have been looking for something that will meet building regs to cover them and found these: http://www.electricalcounter.co.u...

Hello, I'm new but have been lurking for years! For the last few years I've been on a big energy efficiency push. Three years ago I bought a load of those chinese 3 watt GU10 LED bulbs from ebay for around £1.50 each (ish). I purchased one of each type initially as an experiment and settled on one p...
