The powercuts were real but the 'winter of discontent' was something dreamt up by the Tory press. Really ? I remember unburied bodies stored in refrigerator trucks, huge piiles of uncollected black bags clogging streets, almost daily strikes in turn by railways, miners, car makers, steel makers, co...

Re: Preparing for the blackouts

I'm thinking of preparing for the blackouts this winter. I'm gonna have a little box with stuff in it, which I can easily get to in case the lights turn out. Apart from the obvious candles and torches I'm wondering what else I can put in this box. Entertainment of the mind is an important issue but...

Sir originally I used an old greenhouse to dry out the wood for my stove, it took half the time outdoor drying does, about 6 months to get the moisture under the 20% mark, but since then we keep the drying wood in an old conservatory and it goes to under 11% in 3 months. I passed this info on to a c...

GM foods story in papers

I was wondering what the forums in house agricultural experts made of this article, I dont have any experience in this contentious issue and wondered what the consensus was ? http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2211737/How-GM-crops-increased-use-danger-pesticides-created-superweeds-toxin-resista...

It is a mathematical fact that, in order to "downsize", one has to have something larger to downsize from . And in order to simplify, one's life has initially to be relatively complex in the first place. I read PermacultureMag and it's great, but it does rather assume that you already hav...

NR, rarely have I seen more chips-on-a-shoulder displayed in one post. Powerswitch is a broad church and one with a richness of opinion, but it would be richer if you'd engage with the topics rather than rehearsing your own resentments. Feedback offered constructively and hopefully, as I am sure yo...

The middle classes will prolly just keep doing what they have been doing for the last 15 years, exchanging Chelsea post codes for Shire post codes, fitting wood burning/ pellet burning multi fuel cookers and fires to their idylic piles, whacking in ground source heat pumps and PV arrays, encouraging...

Most survivalists today tend to be a far cry from the survivalists of old, more and more survivalists ( now generally called preppers) today are just ordinary families and individuals who see the world becoming ever more insecure and unstable in recent years. Since 911 and 7/7 things have changed cu...

On another forum some chaps are advocating using unpopular wind turbines unreliable irregular output to be used to split water into hydrogen and oxygen which can then be stored in vessels and burnt when needed to generate power at peak times ???

Good well thought out list leaning towards the specific threats that are likely in major cities. I was wondering if like other London based preppers if you have reccied any of the erm " alternative" BO routes and did you find any extra possible unforseen harzards, IE one our my old lot pla...

I know very little about Peak oil issues thats why I joined, I tend to find that I can obtain better well thought out info on energy issues off forums like these than I can from Trade Events plus the info here is free and energy shows cost a bomb :)

Ta for the welcome.

I've only seen clips online, maybe enough to get the gist. I did like the guy growing tilapia fish in an old swimming pool. He seemed to have the right idea. Interestingly enough, one of the old boys at our amateur radio club was talking about the series last week. There are a lot of folk worried a...

Cant disagree with that appraisal :) but its a risk one takes innit :) Least preppers are not likely to get photographed, kettled or get their heads kicked in by cops at protest events though :)
