I think democracy is incredibly over-rated and was a bad idea from the start - Plato was scathing and critical of democracy and I think he had a point.

I don't think it should be banned. Fecking bureaucracy.

A friend volunteered with a mental health charity, after leaving an institution himself and he ended up getting a good paid job and eventually a management position.

Not wishing to piss on anyones candle here, but do many powerswitch members actually give a toss what gold is worth today ? You might not be interested and fair enough, but considering we're up to 12 pages of the thread already obviously some of us do. In a world of finite resources does it really ...

we also happen to be talking about the birthplace of Homo sapiens , or close enough. This hostile environment is supposedly our natural home. Well yes, but it was also naturally covered in large amounts of tree cover - we've chopped the majority of that down which has had big impacts on the water, ...

You could always consider one of those $100 laptops they make for the Africans? They only use 5-8 watts and can be powered by solar or winding them up. If you do keep your existing laptop consider swapping the hard drive for a solid state drive as these can use less energy (shop around for a specifi...

Wilderness survival skills could be handy, but no matter your skills, survival in the woods on your own isn’t likely to be feasible or pleasant for long. Perhaps in a low population density country like Canada or New Zealand, but there’s just too many of us here. I would recommend training up in a c...

I once sold my soul for a satsuma, though luckily I got it back later.

In other news gold is now down to £923. From what I had read on ZH and SMT particularly I was expecting a drop today, so I'm glad I waited.

Providing vast quantities of food aid to countries has also often had the unfortunate negative side effect of driving many local farmers out of business, making the locals less food secure and more reliant on food imports. NGOs, companies and individuals have been working for decades to try to impro...

chickens would be the one, the poor mans occasional meat. I wouldn't know but I'd guess this is the case in third world countries today. Quite possibly. A fellow student on my agroforestry masters is from Nigeria and on the away trip he was surprised to see a mature chicken wandering around the gro...

It may indeed, but then collapse when folk discover that you can't eat it and several nations decide to sell their stock. There's 60 000 tonnes of the stuff lying idle in government vaults. In a complete collapse (like in the film The Road ) I think gold will loose most to all it's value and be pre...

That's absolutely the plan - you can see the full breakdown of the austerity measures on Zero Hedge and they're pretty horrifying and widespread e.g. cutting the public sector by over 90% over 4 years. For their sake the absolute best thing to do would be to default now - they're fubared in the shor...
