Cheers, we live in a house with only 2 wood burners to do all the heating, 4 adults and 3 kids and no heating upstairs either and it's completely fine so I agree with you on that front!

Friends New house heating options

Hi, I've been sent this email from a good friend "Was wondering if you knew much about the best (most energy efficient/environmentally friendly) ways to heat homes? The place we're trying to buy at the moment only has a log burner and 2 storage heaters with no heating on the 1st floor. Apparent...

UK Petrol/Diesel sales stats

Hi,

Does anyone know if there are statistics for weekly/monthly sales of petrol/diesel in the UK?

Cheers,
Andy

Thanks all, really good tips. We're living in a well insulated house (renting) with a good few years of wood, there is a well for water and we have some gardening space. And a few years of thinking about this, growing etc already. (see previous post for the potential acre for growing) So need to mov...

What would you spend £1000 on?

Say hypothetically someone had given you £1000 quid which you weren't expecting, what would you buy to "prepare" for the future. I'm building up a wish list: #1 is a scythe and kit (around £200). I'm thinking about a solar panel/battery etc for a caravan we own - probably 300 quid? We have...

I've got a ditch blade and a bush blade for mine, as it's mainly used for long grass and weeds.
I can see this is going to become and expensive hobby

We've grown veg before but a lot less than an acre, so we will do it in stages, keeping the weeds down but not bare soil (which isn't good either as you'd lose the topsoil)

Thanks for all the replies. I'm going to get a scythe off Simon Fairlie, think it should handle the weeds.

Pigs is a good idea, just need a reliable battery/electric fence given we won't be there 24/7. Something to think about for spring anyway....

I like it Biff and it's definitely something to aim for. Problem is getting it to that state when it's full of creeping buttercup, brambles, docks etc.

I'm not really up for black plasticing the whole plot so may try some different approaches....

Yes we're pretty excited, been looking for land for a while, although we won't own it, we know the people who own it now (it's part of 30 acres) won't mess us around.... who knows they may sell in the future. Keeping fingers crossed we can make use of the caravan that is there too as it's a couple o...

An overgrown acre

Hi, We've been offered an acre of land to grow on. Before the death of the owner a year ago it was cultivated organically and was really well looked after (so has a decade of muck etc on) However it is really overgrown now but you can see the remains of what was (leeks going to seed etc). Weeds main...

An interest rate of 7.5% means that the Green Deal won't be taken up. Basically instead of investing in your house, over half of your payments will be going to finance companies.. It just beggars belief that we should be transferring even more wealth to finance companies rather than investing it in ...

Turns out the author of the Harvard paper (which Monbiot quotes) is a "former Italian oil industry executive without academic credentials."
